BM Clone put to the rope

Post by old4570 »

It was cheap , and I wanted to see how the steel was + Never discount Covid Boredom ! ::hmm::

Anyways , I decided to sharpen this one and do away with the factory edge test . We already know the steel is soft mystery steel .
I havent used my Lansky Style sharpener yet , so , why not !
Using the coarsest stone ( 70 grit ) I started freshening the edge .

Bottom line ... It made it to 200 slices . Not bad for mystery steel . ( It is soft steel ::facepalm:: ) So ::woot::

So average performance from a budget knife . ::groove::
I have already put a fresh edge on the other knife ( 1st one ) samo samo as the 2nd knife ( This one )
So I will cut some rope with the 70 grit edge and see how it goes - Hopefully better than the 50 in the past .

I think 200 rope cuts is great performance. Even 50 is 'not bad'.
Are my standards too low ?

Any blade that fails at 50 is pretty much junk .
100 slices is a low average ..
420 / 440 stainless can reach 150
Decent CrMov can reach 200+
D2 should be in the 400 / 450 region

::teary_eyes:: People are happy = ::hmm:: ( Well , it's a variable )

I have mystery steel that goes 500+ ... Not just one knife , but 4 of them .. ( Same brand / style )
3 are the same knife , and at $25 ozzi bananas are a steal .
The seller got a new batch , so I shelled out another 25 bananas for a 4th one . Lets see how good it is ! ::shrug::
Columbia SA39 ..... ::tu:: ( 3 so far ) Can they maintain the insane edge holding ? ( I want to know bad enough to shell out 25 )

Also , knives are variables , and respond to sharpening differently .
This is why , when I get a low result I change the way the blade is sharpened and I may also change grit .
Generally , the softer the steel , the rougher the grit it responds too . ( For me - so far )
Something about polishing a turd is a waste of time . ( Well , with bad / soft steel anyways - for me )

Three in a row and all are super sharp cannot be a 'fluke'. Your 4th will almost certainly be just the same.

A) SA39 came today  -
B) I tested No1 Clone (OP) with the lansky style sharpener edge ( 70 grit 25deg )
This was the previous 50/50/50 performer ..
This time around it got to 100 slices and then ...
It'sa cold / wet / rainy day .. So the humidity is up ..
And apparently the paper is absorbing the moisture .. This affects the paper slice ... ( Wet paper N all )
Came inside , got some dry paper and , sliced fine for a pass ..
So the knife would have been on its way to 150 slices .. ::dang::
But it's really just too cold and wet to do this testing ..

Butt! ::skeptic:: , it does give validity to the 70 grit edge . ::paranoid::
I will just have to do this again - weather permitting .
