Buffalo Horn handle question
Buffalo Horn handle question
I have this Case 6254 trapper that I had re-handled in black Buffalo horn in 2017.
Here is a link to the thread I originally posted about the knife back then
https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kn ... =2&t=51165
I still carry and use the knife, I like it quite a bit and the shield side horn has held up really well, but the opposite side, not so much. Rough flaky edges started to appear on the surface, which eventually kind of splintered off completely, leaving me with what you see in these pics here
I am looking for ideas about how I should or could proceed with this, as it is quite rough, and thin. Is there a sealant of some sort I could apply to those areas to hopefully stabilize it, so it doesn't deteriorate further? I really like the shield side, and don't want to have the knife rehandled again. Bob did a fantastic job on it, especially with pinning on an older style shield for me, and I don't want to mess with that.
I did send a message to Bob also, but he isn't very active on here anymore and don't know if he's seen it. Just looking for thoughts and ideas.
Thanks

Re: Buffalo Horn handle question
You can flood the cracking with super glue to stabilize it.
You can file/sand the edges smooth, or fill the voids with casting resin blackened with carbon black, or extremely finely ground charcoal.
If you choose to fill it, use masking tape along the blade well side to dam it up.

Re: Buffalo Horn handle question
Mike,
Bill has some good suggestions. Another option is to send it back to me and I'll take care of it. No charge except postage. Horn grows in layers and sometimes those layers can separate. It's not a common problem, but it does happen. Let me know if you need my address.

Update!
Bob (Elvis) graciously offered to fix up this handle for me, but when he got it in hand , came to the conclusion that just replacing the scale on that side would be the best course of action. He did so, and here's the result! Obviously I am very happy with it, and tip my hat to a job well done by Bob. Thank you sir.

Re: Buffalo Horn handle question
Glad to help Mike. There was too much of that scale missing because of the horn separating, so a replacement just seemed to make sense.

Re: Buffalo Horn handle question
Good job Elvis! I had a problem with Buffalo horn also on a fixed blade knife I made years ago. One side kept warping up on the end. Finally had to replace it. Just would not lay flat.

That came out great!
Very generous of Bob to do that. A class act for sure.
