Unusual Robeson Swell-Center "Stabber" Jack Back Together
Unusual Robeson Swell-Center "Stabber" Jack Back Together

Charlie (RobesonsRME.com) and others were kind enough to provide information and opinions, and Charlie provided a photo of another "stabber" jack. (Charlie, I hope and pray that you and your family are doing OK with the virus.)
I sent the blade and spring out to Gary Claxon for welding and I think he outdid himself this time! He welded a new tip on the blade and replaced the lost metal on the tang, and filled in the huge divot worn in the spring. I got the parts back on Monday (third picture) and couldn't wait to put this old guy back together. My patch on the mark side scale doesn't match as well as I would like, but I'm pretty happy to have this one in my collection. Both blades have incredible snap!

Mike, and everyone else, thanks for kind words. I learned from my first post of this knife on the Robeson forum that the scales are early "pick bone" and the long pull and tangs stamps indicate it is a very early 20th century knife. Normally, I wouldn't try to patch a missing piece of bone that large, but I think that "pick bone" was worth saving. The problem is it was very difficult to match since there is a lot of color variation and no pattern. As a result, my patch stands out like a sore thumb. Now on the pile side I had to do a much smaller patch. Can you find it?Meridian_Mike wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 6:24 pm WOW.... great ALL AROUND job!

Made a nice addition to your collection buddy!

It took me a while to find the patch (or, at least, what I believe is a small patch!) on the pile side.
Very good work!

The big, ugly patch is on the mark side, but there is a smaller one that blended in much better on the pile side. (Don't tell anyone, but it is next to the pin on the "barehead" end.)

Herb, that is fantastic work! I've never seen a welded blade before. You saved an oldie! Kudos!
