I would agree Dale I believe that is why the rivets are there too. The reason for the rivet in the middle is to protect the stitching because that is where the stitching usually gets cut on that type of a sheath. That's why Western started putting rivets along that edge; at least that's my theory.
I hand stitch my sheaths.
