Verdigris on Nickel Silver??

Post by CampbellAr2 »

Howdy,....newbie question time:
I inherited a Buck 110 25th Anniversary edition which my dad had tucked away for some years in a old Schrade leather sheath. Although I'm familiar with what to expect on brass bolsters, I was a bit shocked to see the green slime on nickel silver. After rubbing this off and cleaning with Wrights silver cream, I still found some discolorations (Pic1)and pitting (Pic2) under the thickest accumulation of verdigris. These discolorations feel smooth while the pitting actually has dulled/roughed up the surface.

1) Is verdigris normal for nickel silver or was this something that transferred from the old sheath previous contents?
2) What should be my next steps if I want to clean this up?

Not at all uncommon to see verdigris on nickel silver, which is nominally 60% copper. Frequently seen on knives stored in leather sheaths. Should come right off with a little paste polish, a soft cotton cloth, and some elbow grease. The nicks may be independent of the verdigris, possibly from use.

Some of the names for Nickel Silver are "German Silver" and " White Brass" so as Ken said, no surprises here.

Unfortunately verdigris if it is left long enough will eat into both brass and nickel silver.
You might be able to sand it down a little bit and then polish it out if it's not too deep. ::shrug::
