Playing around...

Post by Doc B »

Once again...apologies to the folks that do amazing work in restoration of worthy knives. Playing around trying to understand and repair knives. This is my first attempt at pulling a knife (cheap knife) apart. Figured I'd start with a knife that wasn't pinned through the bolsters...since this was my first attempt at the pinning process. Also, my first attempt at moving a "shield". Shield was pitted and rusted...and after sanding it...knife was so cheap it looks like they couldn't afford solid stainless steel...looks like copper on the inside...ha! The blade was flopping around and the celluloid was deteriorating. Rehandled with G-10. Got the blade tightened up and usable; although, I'd describe the snap as being something closer to grandma chomping down on something with her dentures out...ha again! Did get it cleaned up, sharpened and turned in to a user.
Showed it to a hard working guy in our clinic; and, after showing him pictures of what I started with (and reviewing it's overhauled shortcomings)...gave it to him and thanked him for his hard work. He seemed to really like it.

I'd say that turned out real nice Doc. If that's your first attempt I think you're right on schedule. Well done. ::nod::
