I was just plain convinced that my knife was put together backwards. I (for some reason) thought the main blade should have been on the same side as the scale with the shield.

I can see why you thought that. I've had several people ask me if it was a left-hand knife. :)
A pocket knife is still an intimate personal possession of the individual who carries it and consequently deserves the best of materials, finish and workmanship in its production. (Quoted from Boker's 1928 cutlery catalog).
