First Gen Camillus 72
Re: First Gen Camillus 72
Nice job Randy!
I would carry it, in fact yesterday I was carrying a first-generation #72.
It looks great!

Thanks Dale. You know I love that pattern. I think I have two boxes of them. And I just bought a couple more! And I have two that I plan on modding in the near future. Whether I'm using, repairing or collecting I love them!

When you say "Cut them apart" are you using a shear blade to actually cut the back spring pivot pin?
I am using a 1/16" hardened blade to shear the pin but I worry EVERY time that I am going to break a good handle. I still find it easier than drilling, and removing the leftovers but my nerves are paying the price.

Tommy, if you're talking about these, the answer is no. They are too thin and too brittle.carrmillus wrote:........will a single edge razor blade work for cutting the pins???.......... ................#goldpan wrote:I use a utility knife blade and a hammer. If however you are talking about these blades used in razor knives then the answer is yes. As I understand Randy, Dale and Glenn, these are what they prefer.

Jerry is correct! I tried those single edge razors at first. One whack and their done and the pin isn't cut.....

Re: First Gen Camillus 72
Randy if you hadn't cut trail for me, I probably would have tried one of those, even though Dale (I think or it may have been Glenn or somebody else) had already recommended the utility knife blade.#goldpan wrote:Jerry is correct! Steel pins need to be drilled or have the peen ground off (as a generality)

This is where my anxiety about breaking or cracking handles comes in... I guess I just need more experience on beaters to get comfortable with the whole concept#goldpan wrote:I cut steel pins too. Never had an issue cutting pins of all kinds.

You would be surprised at what you can cut with a utility razor. Here is a link to a knife I did a couple years ago. 1/8 th steel pins. Cut with a razor! : https://allaboutpocketknives.com/knife_ ... lonial#top

You are quite good at this Randy. I can see your no fear type of approach, and I respect that.#goldpan wrote:You would be surprised at what you can cut with a utility razor. I just need more practice, a few more broken bits, and it will come together.

Re: First Gen Camillus 72
Actually more like ignorance, I simply had no doubt it would do the job. I also have Asperger's its a form of Autism. Not bad for a 60 year old that simply does what I think I needs to be done. Lots of trial and error in my life. That's how I learn! Its tough to learn this way, but once I get something down its mine for life! Plus having spent the last 20 years dealing with sever pain issues involving my hands, neck and back. I need things to work without too much experimenting these days. So after trying lots of ways to cut pins I asked Dale (Orvet) how he did it and that's what I do. Wished I wasnt so stubborn. I should have asked sooner but I have to through the error making before I find my own answer. Or when frustrated enough I ask for help. Kinda like doing everything bass ackwards! Thank goodness for AAPK and all of the friends that I have made here. That Colonial was done shortly after I had my cervical spine fused at C5. Just have to keep busy! Plus too stubborn to rest!

Re: First Gen Camillus 72
I feel terrible about your health issues, and more so the pain you have to live with.
My pain(s) come from years of motor sports, water, and snow skiing, and free climbing accidents. Combine a daredevil mentality, and no money for hospitals... you get a worn out pile of misaligned bones in a tired body.
I get it!
I think other than health we have a lot in common as far as learning processes go. I have to hear a flowing conversation to actually learn things. Written instruction NEVER sinks in. I can follow audio tutorials tho.
Sooo all that makes for that bass akwards approach you use. Thus my modified chisel attempts. I also bought a 10lb chunk of tool steel for an anvil but I found I need a "Stiddy" with a flange to do what I need to do.
I hope I don't wear out my welcome by asking the most basic questions all over the forum but it is how I learn.
Thanks for putting up w/ me in your thread. The info is more than helpful.
Ps... keep hanging tight. Even when it hurts to build things, the end result is always worth your effort.
