Need Puma White Hunter restored

Post by wornoutwrench »

Hello All:
I recently found out that my older brother still has the Puma White Hunter he bought in the late 60s, but it has not been well cared for. He made a poor attempt at removing some pitting on the blade and made things worse IMO.
The wood handle and sheath are still Ok.
I am looking for someone to restore the blade and give it a light overall polish.
Anyone interested or recommendations?
Thanks

Off the top of my head I'd recommend "Muskrat Man" or "Goldpan". They both have stores here where you can contact them. I think the other guys are "Task Saturated" at this time. If that doesn't help, PM me and I'll give you some more names.

Another option might be Scott (TripleF). He's worked miracles with refurbishing blades.

How about a picture? I don't believe I've ever seen a Puma White Hunter with wood handles. Not saying they don't exist, just saying I've never seen one and would like to.

Yeah, I would trust Scott with my knife.

Sorry, no pictures yet. The knife is still in Maryland and I'm in California.
I was back there for his wedding as his best man and we got to reminiscing.
He knows I'm into knives so he dug it out. I was there when he bought it and remember it clearly.
I'd really like to get it cleaned up for him, thanks for all the suggestions.
I'll get some photos when I receive the knife.

Thanks Ken, I forgot about Scott. He's done some really good work on a few of my knives with badly scratched up blades. ::tu::

Many of the White Hunters had high carbon steel blades that were plated with industrial hard chrome.
The plated blades do not refinish easily. The remaining plating has to be removed, then re-applied after the refinishing is done.

I hope that's not the case.
Is there a time frame or serial number range that you are aware of where this took place?
I think it was the very late 60s or early 70s when the knife was purchased.
The knife is sentimental, but probably not worth that much trouble.

If there is a number on your knife, like this;
Puma White Hunter Mfg Control Number.JPG
It is not a serial number. It's a "Manufacturing Control Number" and marks what year the knife was made and what quarter or half year the knife was made within that year. If there is no number stamped on the knife, the knife was made prior to October 1964.

Most that I have seen were plated. I don't know a time frame, sorry.
Try posting pictures of the blade and perhaps I can tell you.
