8OT rehandle part two _done_

Post by #goldpan »

I rehandled An 8OT for Jim (Shorthairbirddog) and the old stag handles both came off in one piece. Normally something makes them unusable but not these. So Philco had an 8OT and wanted to know if they could be placed on his knife.

This is the doner knife with the fat stag handles.

I removed the rocker pin and she slid apart quite nicely.

The stag was already cut to size. All I have to do is remove the old adhesive and glue and pin!

She went back together easy and after compressing the springs I inserted the new rocker pin. I'm done for the night. Check back tomorrow!

I only need to buff the peened rivet heads, but she is basically done!

When I got her together last night the blades were stiff and did not make that satisfying "snick" on any of the blades. I planned on having it in the mail today but had to fix the tight blades first. So after putting it together and taking it apart several times I finally found the sweet spot ::tu:: What I wound up doing to was to rotate the heads on the swinden keys 1/8th of a turn at a time. Turn the key reassemble and check the function. Disassemble and repeat until you hear that "snick", then you know its right! ::nod::

As I played with the "key" I found that the faces on the keys were in state of parallax. That's where the inside faces on the round key heads were not parallel to each other. If the key is oriented the wrong way its too tight. I never found a spot where it was loose. I remembered the idea of parallax from the days when I used to turn brake rotors. Anyway she is headed home tomorrow.

It sure looks good from here Randy. I'm really looking forward to taking her for a test drive. She just might get to go to the Blade Show with me in a couple of weeks for show and tell. 8)

Nice work Randy, it is no easy task to remove stag from one knife and install it on another without at least cracking it. Well done! ::tu::

I like you trick of twisting the head of the Swinden rivet... great ingenuity! ::nod::

Thanks Dale! Those stag handles came off clean, not the normal thing for me. The Delrin came off easy but my ball cutter took off and scarred the heck out one side while I grinding the head off the pivot pin. I always try to remove the handles and keep em' clean just for the practice, most of the time its cracking like you said. Or the ball cutter getting away from the work ::doh::

Thanks Scott! Jim it would have never happened without you! ::tu:: Philco was lucky that both sides came off without breaking one of them. Like Dale said, getting old stag off is a chore. I got lucky since this pair was glued on. And the stag got a new home instead the waste can ::nod::

The knife returned to Ky. today looking way better than when it left. Randy you did a marvelous job and I'm very appreciative of your willingness to take this project on. This baby is already getting pocket time. Thanks for a job very well done! ::handshake::
