Welcome to AAPK. That is a really cool old knife. I also like that shield, I have never seen one.

Great find and a very rare shield. I've been collecting knives made in New Britain Connecticut for as long as I can remember and between my son and I we have about 80 Landers, Frary & Clark and 20 Humason & Beckley folding knives. What you found is a fine example of old world cutlery and with the right care and storage should last an other hundred years. Thanks for sharing it with us and welcome to AAPK!

Re: Humason & Beckley Mfg. Co
Humason & Beckley must be a pretty obscure brand. It has been almost exactly a year between posts re' a newly acquired H&B.
I have a deeply pocketed friend here that collects them with a passion. Not his only interest, but he pursues H&B's really hard. Used to be, every time I saw a nice one on Ebay, I alerted him and he usually wins them.
He's getting on in years and his health is not good. His son has asked me to quit selling him knives and helping him to buy them. The son wasn't ugly about it, he is a friend also and an avid collector of U.S. military knives, he just knows he and his brother will have to deal with all his dad's stuff some day fairly soon, a formidable task.
And that is a very nice one you posted.

Hi Charlie - Have your friends sons contact me, I'd be happy to make a fair offer for the entire lot of H&B's when they are ready. My 20 year old son collects them and I enjoy giving them to him at birthdays and Christmas. Tom

I just have the one big old hunter in ebony. I would not want to catch my finger in this one! It is available.
Re: Humason & Beckley Mfg. Co
TR, I like that one but timing is all wrong. I will back at my regular job in a couple months. I was laid off in june of last year. I have been picking up work where ever and when ever I can. Currently in a slump. If I weren't I would go for that one. Thanks for posting it

Thanks, Monte. I really did. I think this hunter is the only one I own. It is at the very least, 100 years old.
Like Charlie says, they are pretty obscure. I'm grateful to have it.
Much thanks to Tongueriver for offering it for sale.

That is a beauty of a Hunter Joe ... Don't forget our Traditional Hunters thread probably down a few pages now - it deserves to be archived on that one too ...

Reviving this thread…
Here’s a 2 blade H&B tip bolstered senator or equal end pen at a closed length of 3 & 1/8” . Though I do like pen knives in general (and more will be coming) this particular H&B knife has worm groove bone handles which I thought was pretty unique to see on small handle covers. In fact if you look at the mark vs pile sides the worm groove pattern is almost an exact match which I think was the mark of a skilled cutler (or craftsman) responsible for the jigging. Worm groove bone is probably right there as one of my favorite bone handles ... The deep H&B etch on the master blade is pretty worn though the tang stamps are clear – interestingly one can not read the entire tang stamp on the master blade as it is hidden by the handle or bolster but the pen blade tang stamp was easy to see in the half stop position.
Thanks for looking!

That's a very sweet knife, Lee.
The worm groove is a real plus.
A great old Connecticut knife. And there are many.
