I love finding these early Case boxes...

Post by knifeaholic »

I like to pick up empty older Case boxes when I can...and eventually match them up with a knife with the correct pattern number and stamping that matches the box. Case used these old blue boxes from the Tested era through the mid-1950's. This one originally held six of the 6231 pattern.

So I'll have to find a mint Tested or XX 6231.

I'll show the end and the other side of the box later when I have more time to take photos.

It's nice to see that you still enjoy the thrill of the hunt, even with all the knives you've handled through the years!

Like Glenn says the thrill of the hunt for our treasure is half the fun of our addiction ,I mean hobby.
Old boxes are fun to collect. I really like some of the old graphic art work. Oh what a thrill it would be to find a half dozen box with six knives inside still wrapped in grease paper. ::ds::

Ok so I took another photo..this is the end of the box where the pattern number is written. Some of you may wonder what that squiggle is at the end of the 6231. It is a cursive letter "I". I love the fact that someone hand-labeled each box. Imagine having that job?

The "I" stands for "iron" as in iron liners/bolsters. That was the less expensive version of this knife, as compared to nickel silver bolsters and brass liners.

Ya know...when I bought this box out of an old desk drawer at an antique shop, I thought it was little heavy for an empty box...must be full of nuts & bolts or fishing sinkers. Never bothered to take the lid off.

When I tipped it up on end to take this photo...yeah definitely heavy...

Here is a picture of the box bottom...I love how Case put the sharpening instructions on each box.

Definitely a heavy box though...well, maybe tomorrow I'll open it up to see whether it is nuts & bolts or fishing sinkers inside.

Too tired right now.

Nice box in beautiful condition. The few boxes I've had were pretty rough.

I'll bet there's some old Holley blades in there. ::woot::

Seems to me to be a problem for the collector with this. Do you unwrap to confirm the contents and establish the era made or leave it as is. Is it more valuable as is?

An amazing find Steve, congratulations.
