p.s--tjmurphy--WE ARE NOT ALONE FRIEND ::tu:: ----There are few collectors from my experience that collect what we like, instead of what SELL'S good(case xx ::nod:: ::dang:: )---Thx Mark

There are a lot of us out here. We are not merchants. I myself do not collect what is easiest to sell, but what I like. The three Excelsoir knives in my collection cost me less than 100 bucks total. The jack with a shield (posted earlier in this thread) was in a pile dumped out on a table at a flea market for sale. There was a rush for the Case knives (three used up relics) while I picked up the pearl. After the Case knives were sold I asked how much for this old knife with the broken nail nick and bought it for less than any of the Cases sold for. Reading the books again and again has paid off a few times for me :) P.S. Thanks LT. for the informative post, and to everyone for showing your knives. And to galvanic ::drool:: ::drool:: ::drool::

this is from my latest book, I thought it appropriate for this thread.

Enjoy. It cost a small fortune just to get permission to print it.

Just like we preach to READ the knife. Make sure you READ the photo. it tells you more than a passing glance will say.

There are so many nice pieces in this thread. Here is a Northfield EXCELSIOR KNIFE Co. which very much like yours edgy46 except that it says"KNIFE" instead of "KN." It seems that there are 4 types of Excelsior stamps represented here. The straight EXCLESIOR KNIFE CO., the curved EXCELSIOR KNIFE Co., the curved EXCELSIOR KN. Co., and the EXCELSIOR _._ KNIFE CO. I wonder if the mark with the hyphen bullet hyphen is from the Torrington firm and if the straight excelsior is the oldest Northfield mark? Or, the straight excelsior mark is simply used on larger jack knives? Also, am I correct in thinking that the Excelsior knife co. stamp was not used past 1905?

Thought I'd add pics to this thread. Tang stamp is very faint but can be read in just the right light.

Up until 1920 or so.The look of the construction would place it towards the latter. There was a guy named Gill who used Northfield marked blades from left over parts into the 1960's.It is possible I suppose that he also could have used blades marked Excelsior also, but that is complete speculation.

Nice knives Scott, Roger and Mike ::tu:: ::tu:: ...

Scott - actually that is the first Excelsior I have seen with celluloid handles and thanks for bringing this back to top ::tu::

Roger that Excelsior is rather special for sure - minty as they say and beauty of an etch ::tu::

Mike - a Cattle knife with MOP and nice etch - awesome as well ::tu::

Any Excelsior is pretty rare... Never knew we had a thread on Excelsior as I see it was resurrected from 2012... Here's a Excelsior Hawkbill from me that belongs here as well...
