American Shear & Knife Co.

Post by FRJ »

Here are a couple of knives I just bought.
The hunter is in great shape and still a strong knife with some blade loss. Actually less blade loss than I thought when I won it.
That's always good. 5 1/4".

The Hawkbill is 3 15/16". It certainly was a work knife, but still with us in every way. Absolutely no wobble on this knife or the hunter.
The blade was grinder abused.

So glad to have these in my collection.

Thanks for looking.

Awesome old brand knives Joe. Love the shield on that big coke bottle knife!
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Thank you, Wayne. Yeah, that shield is pretty neat.
Those pictures are black and white. The covers are actually Rosewood I think.

That big coke bottle hunter is awesome and the hawkbill shows the hard work from use but as you said "keeps on ticking" Joe ::tu:: ::tu:: .... blade looks solid :) ... what I find really interesting is that the blade cutting edge is well below the tang like a fixed blade hunter - cool!!!

Here's a little info and a not-so-great-shape Hotchkissville (H'Ville) knife that I bought for the stamp.

This little girl is no wall flower. 3 inches closed.
It has springs that will get your attention. The main blade has very positive half stops.
It shows off those beautiful Mother of Pearl covers with that unique curvey shape.
And get a load of those double pulls on the main blade. That on a 3 inch shadow knife.
No brass on this girl; high end nickel silver all the way.
Sunken joints with little half moons ground in the frame to reach the long pulls. Classy!
All this from American Shear & Knife. 1853-1914.

Thanks for looking.

Here is a Wharncliffe pearl that is three and one quarter inch closed. Half stop on the pen only.
No serif on the font. I wonder if that would help date this knife.

Looks like it might have sat on a bench at the court house working on a stick. And that is a compliment. As a boy used to see old timers sitting around the court house in Bonham Texas, talking and whittling. That one would fit right in. I like it.
