Wharncliffe Knives

Neat little 3 1/4" whittler that was gifted to me from a friend. Curtin & Clark/Cutlery Co/ Kansas City Mo.

Point of my post is the wharncliffe blade on a different knife from those we have seen so far… at least to my eye I would consider it a wharncliffe….

Knife:
Advertising knife - “Compliments of The Thurber Whyland Company” on mark side with “Smoke Key West Perfecto 5cent Cigars” on pile side… .. The knife appears to be a box-bartenders knife – with a wharncliffe blade, nail puller, Caplifter and cork screw – and a hammer on bottom right when looking on the mark side to bang back in I assume cigar box nails. (Length – not sure but think 3.5” closed)…. the mark side tang stamp is LION with a lion laying down stamped underneath only on the wharncliffe – on the pile side is Warranted… Given that tang stamp info (and Goins book the knife was made in Germany by C Lutters & Co – 1840 – 1960 – Solingen. Snaps well and pretty tight... no doubt worn but not terribly sharpened at all (despite a small metal mite bite...)...

The history in short - Thurber Whyland was a NYC “grocer” of sorts – cigars etc… They existed between 1880-1898 at least based on some historical info that I was able to find about the company (nothing on the knife)… Thurber Whyland was purchased by a bigger firm I believe in 1898 (Green Grocer?)…

Ok – NOT my knife but interesting… can possibly be my knife if an agreement on price is made with somebody I know on the local front… this is more of a special opportunity possibility for my collection (old is good – maker not all of interest – but unique in terms of utility in old days so I am considering it strongly)… but also have a few questions in trying to learn about these knives that I was hoping you guys can help me with - "learn me fellas" …

Do I understand correctly that a box knife by itself is rather rare ? and the combo with a wharncliffe, nail puller and other bartender aspects is unique… value on this is a toughie – rare doesn’t necessarily mean expensive though box knives have a decent price tag in BRLs 3rd edition. Maybe more valuable as in many cases to the collector and their interests or is this just a "keeper" no matter what you collect... So basically curious to hear what guys think about this knife… I have a very trusted opinion to date but always like to hear how folks think about these things..

Thanks Joe .... interesting knife that sports a wharncliffe in my opinion... maybe I should have posted questions about the knife under General Discussion or Questions... but still think this knife fits here as just a different wharncliffe example....

But someone frequenting this thread might like this knife.

I don't know what went on with the pattern stamp, but the last digits, which are really "008" is the correct number for a Robeson Wharncliffe knife.

It looks like the first digit might have been a "7" which would have meant pearl and they just struck it out, but I have never seen those random dots on a Robeson before.

Handles are ebony and I know Robeson made such a knife because I have one with a proper pattern number.

This one came as a gift from a fellow knife lover who clearly knows my proclivity for the Wharncliffe profile. Very well-made knife. Precision engineering, liner lock, snick-snack walk and talk...not my first choice of handle scales, but probably the sharpest edge I have ever seen on a factory knife; scary sharp.

Oooh, I like the handles on it. Actually I like the whole knife. I'm looking for a Camillus with PCB handles that I can afford. I tried to get some rejected PCBs from a company I used to work for but found out they no longer populate their own boards. Bummer.

Schrade Walden, made for Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals. A three blade (drop, nail file, and small Wharncliffe). What's interesting, is that about 20 or 30 years later Lilly had another knife specially made, this time a Victorinox with a Wharncliffe instead of its typical drop point. Supposedly, the purpose of that blade being on both knives, made primarily to give to doctors by drug salesmen, was to perform an emergency tracheotomy.

Cool. I didn't know about that one. My Eli Lilly is an Imperial. One of my best friends of 50 years gave it to me. His got it from his older brother who was a salesman for Eli Lilly.

I think the single blade wharncliffe mini trapper 107W is probably my favorite Case pattern.

This Schatt & Morgan #376, Swell Center Trapper has a nice size Wharncliffe secondary blade.

Beautiful Copperlocks Q, sweet group of Wharn blades above them. Beautiful S&M too. Funny, I got scolded and called out once for posting a knife with a Wharn blade but NOT a Wharncliffe frame and style in this very thread. Nobody mentioned that here. Interesting. Maybe the purists are currently asleep. But they'll wake up eventually I figure.

Awesome wharncliffes Q ... the wharncliffe mods by Glenbadd are very cool looking with the copperlocks!!

Iman - never knew there were wharncliffe purists ... to me a wharncliffe frame without a wharncliffe blade is no different than a wharncliffe blade without a wharncliffe frame and than of course there are those knives which sport both - all wharncliffes IMHO... just my 2 cents ....

I believe the distinction between Wharncliffe frame and Wharncliffe blade was bandied about some earlier in the thread before all came to a gentleman's agreement that this thread would feature both.

(You might run into some resistance if you try posting a long, thin Wharncliffe blade, however... )
