Wharncliffe Knives

If it's a Wharncliffe in a folder you can't get it down flat. Most scrapers like that razor blade one are utter crap these days. I like using a spey blade on the gum and such.

I just have to say one thing a wharncliffe blade can't do.
Scrape gum and tape up from the floor. It takes a blade with belly.

I have to agree with Dave on that one. I love wharncliffe blades, and have a couple that I carry. They are great for pealing apples, opening mail, whittling ... most tasks. But if you need to cut up some fish for bait or slice queen olives and cheese, then a clip point with a belly works a lot better. Not saying the wharncliffe cannot do the job, but it is not ideal in my opinion.

No problem getting wharncliffe blades flat enough to scrape a floor, knife blades bend. I don't know how flat you can or cannot get yours, but I know how flat I can get them, I don't scrape gum off floors with my pocket knives either. There's always a scraper, chissel or putty knife around, but if that's what you do, all power to you, scrape away, and if you scrape gum around on your floors regularly, maybe a wharncliffe blade isn't the issue. Might be people who can't find or don't know how to use trash cans. But hey, I definitely could be wrong.

Thanks TJ, and AMEN. I wasn't a Barlow fan at all until I saw that very knife. Then when I got it I became a Barlow fanatic. One of my favorite patterns, styles, bolsters etc. There is nothing not to like on that one. Great knife by itself, but the bone and blade and N on the bolster just slew me. Still recovering. Thanks for the comment and hope you try one out and see for yourself what the fuss is about. I wasn't smart enough to get it until I got it. Then the light bulb went on. Here's the saw cut twin. I have to agree with I-Man. There seems to be a need for a symposium on "Trash Cans and Their Use in Everyday Life".

First item of discussion in the Trash Can Symposium should be the inherent limitations of the common trash can design. I mean, common trash cans may be perfectly suitable garbage receptacles in most household waste situations; but, trash collection experts unanimously agree that they are completely inadequate for use as kitchen stove exhaust hoods for collecting, containing and disposing of cooking fumes, which is a fairly common type of household waste. No, that job requires something much bigger with a much different shape and a wide opening, that can be suspended over a cook stove. So, for all you die-hard fans of common trash can designs, I feel it's important to point out that common trash cans aren't the best waste solution in every conceivable application. (They do hold an awful lot of chewing gum, however, that much I will admit!)

Pulled my GEC knives out of the safe today. I just got a replacement Ebony #13 Whip in the mail today. I was talked into selling the one I had a few weeks before Christmas. I thought I would take a few photos before locking them up.

Thanks, PCW. I honestly don't know the exact number of wharnies I own, but it's fewer than you might think, at least as a percentage of my entire collection. Of approx. 300 or so knives, I would guess about 1/3 - 1/2 are wharnies...so, only around 100 - 150...not that many, really. But, I do tend to prioritize a wharncliffe blade when considering new acquisitions, and as far as that goes, there's no end in sight; bankruptcy or death are about the only two things that could stop me from buying more knives (both of which are constantly looming on the horizon).

Even better, be fortunate to have friends who gift you the knives you desire, as was the case with this custom Wharncliffe Copperlock I received for my birthday last month. That has the double benefit of 1) not costing me any money so I stay out of bankruptcy (for a bit longer), and 2) giving me a reason not to die (for a bit longer) because I want to stick around and enjoy this beautiful knife. Win-Win!

I may have posted these before but I didn't feel like wading through 29 pages so here they are:
1st is a small pearl knife with a curved secondary coping blade stamped G&J Allen Celebrated Cutlery. Carved pearl handles with pique work(small silver pins inset into handle)which dates it to ca 1840-1850.
2nd is an Empire Knife Co. Winsted CT with ebony handles.
Last is an unusual multiblade with engraved metal handles and what appear to be cyphers and English broad arrow stamps. What is unusual about this one is that where the spine of the blades meet the back springs each one is cut at a different angle and they fit very smoothly together.

Can't help myself whenever I see a Case 1st Issue tang-stamp Wharncliffe knife I just have to get it.
