Here is another medical related knife, a scalpel.

This one is interesting in that it has a nickle silver slide ring that slides forward to lock the blade in the open position.

Thank you!

I forgot to add ,if you enlarge the photo you can see the notch in the handle on the back side where the nickle silver ring slides over the tang which holds the tang down so the blade will not accidentally shut when using it.

Here is a custom fleam that won a 1st prize medal in London in 1862 and a silver medal in Paris in 1876.

I think this is an old one.

Don't know what BAM and the Maltese cross mean, but Dungworth is a village name in the Sheffield area, I believe.

Appears to have been well made, but it's a little worse for wear.

I guess one has to wonder how a place got named "Dungworth". ::facepalm::

Dungworth was actually a fairly common family name back then and there were several cutlers listed with that surname in Sheffield during the 19th century. Your model was most likely made by John Dungworth who was listed as a "phleme, lancet, and veterinary instrument maker" in an 1841 directory. He does not appear in an 1852 directory.

So, Dungworth is more likely the maker and not the location.

Any idea what the "BAM+" signifies?

While most commonly associated as part of the famous star and cross symbol of Joseph Rodgers, the Maltese cross was also quite popular with many 19th century Sheffield cutlers. It was often used along with other symbols or words as trademarks for the companies. A few examples similar to this Dungworth would be: "John Greenhough" who used the Maltese cross along with the word "Viena". Another is: "Marsh Brothers" who used as one of their trademarks, a Maltese cross along with the word "ROXO". So with this in mind, It would seem likely that Dungworth was the maker and "BAM and cross" would be the trademark, especially with Dungworth listed as a maker of phlemes and such in 1841.

NICE assortment, Dimitri! ::tu:: ::tu::

Seeing them reminded me of something odd that I saw in the "SHERLOCK HOLMES" movie (2009).
There is a scene where Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) is starting to pick a door lock until
Watson (Jude Law) arrives and kicks the door in. What was odd, was it appears that
Holmes was attempting to pick the door lock with a fleam. See the picture below.
I did a very basic search of antique lock picks and NOT ONE looked like a fleam.
Caption(s), if any, are on the BOTTOM of the corresponding picture(s).

Very interesting Skip, that's certainly a fleam he is trying to use.

I have plenty of lock picks and none resemble a fleam, which aside from being razor sharp would break off rather easily.

Looks like movie theatrics.
