RobesonsRme.com wrote:I seem to recall a discussion re' Schatt and Morgan from a while back that included the information that S&M issued their first catalog with the illustrated knives having a Gowanda, N.Y. stamp, but that they actually relocated before such knives were ever produced.

That premise would make the Schatt above quite rare, because it certainly does looks genuine.

We need David Clark to opine here.

Here is another Gowanda Schatt & Morgan. It is just 2 1/2 " closed. I believe David has a number of these Gowanda S & M's as well. He has a great article in Knife magazine this month. He is quite the Historian!! ::tu::

From what I gather Charlie they are really rare. Of course if anyone would have the the rare S&M's, it would be David. I doubt anyone has the knowledge on this brand that he does ::tu::

Posting an old original Honk Falls bone made in Napanoch NY. It seems you see 10 fakes for every real one. This one is authentic.

Thanks for looking ::tu::

Jud, your Coquanoc saddlehorn knife is very nice. ::tu:: I'm not familiar with the marking, but I can tell it's a fine old knife with beautiful old stag and a well cared for blade.

Beautiful Coquanoc Works Juddstuff! That is stunning stag and a nice spey blade. How long is it closed? It looks to be a speying knife. Goins' lists the date as 1876.

Thanks for the welcome. The closed length is 3 3/8". The stag has really deep crevices and is really nice.

Well, I'd like to thank Dale for selling me this great Honk Falls! I suspect I caught him in a weak moment, but when I saw the pattern (I am kinda focused on Serpentine Jacks of late), and then the tang stamp, I made an offer I hoped he wouldn't refuse!! :D
It was nice to visit at the Oregon Show Dale!!!
The bone handles have a chip in the back, but they swell nicely at the bare end, feeling great in the hand!

It is a nice knife - pocket-smoothed and still snappy, I consider myself lucky!

Here is an ivory Tuxedo marked on both blades "Pratt & Co. Buffalo". Levine says "retail jeweler, 1830-19??, probably made by Ulster".
kj
edit to add: these are not good pics. The ivory has excellent grain, lovely pieces but not evident as such in these pics.
