Thanks Dimitri for showing the Marshall Wells. It's one of our home town company knives probably made by NYK. I have a few of those I should dig out for a photo. I love seeing those old serious working knives with all their time honored bumps and bruises, like their ready for another day at work, just the way I love finding them. ___Dave

Thanks Dave, my pleasure to show it I know what you mean about the old working knives they are some of my favorite ones in the collection, I drop this one in my pocket from time to time and put it back in use.

For reference about Jerry's knife and Rogers observation. Here are examples of Schrade bone (L-R chronologically):
And an early NYK :

Notice the underlying Xs or the criss crosses in the pick bone, these lines appear more prominent on pocket worn pick bone.
These deeper grooves can be seen in the last photo of the NYK.

Amazing how many of these you see, old knives with no makers mark on them except sometimes like this cattle knife, just stamped USA. I picked this one up at a fleamarket for $2 and have used it as an EDC for a while. I suppose it's possible that some of these unmarked knives were originally etched on the blade only, but after years of use that disappears along with any idea of who made them. This one could have been made by Camillus, Schrade, or who knows. The double stamp "USA USA" is kind of interesting.

I picked up this old Hammer Brand cattle knife at the flea market today for a couple of bucks. I have several of these, but none with handle material coloring like this one. Looks like a UPC scanner code.

That kind of reminds me of woodland camo, but in a straight line rather than blobs.

These pictures are of a 3 5/8" pearl handled Waterville cattle knife that was formerly in Harold stockman's collection. The WATER-VILLE mark was used from 1890 to 1913 and the company was based in Connecticut. All of the blades are marked and they all have half stops with crisp snaps at every stop. It is a very well made knife.

There are very few pearl knives in my collection. This is one that I am certain has not be re-handled.

Great old Cattle knife Jerry ... MOP and a Waterville too - that no doubt caught my attention - SWEET .... Interesting in that I have a Waterville Harness Jack but the awl is of a different design....
