Re: Farmer's Jacks
Nice one pile driver , from the look of the bone I’m guessing Ulster Knife Company or possibly Camillus
Always looking for Mint pre war scout knives
Re: Farmer's Jacks
Great looking Farmers Jack and looks to be in great shape PD ... Cool score and please do post the maker once the knife is received... Great looking bone and usually I associate the Catt knives with worm groove bone though do not think all their knives had that jigging ( ) but not seeing it in these photos of the knife...

Looks to be a very nice knife, I'm thinking early Camillus.Pile Driver wrote:I have my first on the way from a lot of 8 knives for cheap, curious to see the maker that is all I have for pictures go off of. Bone looks like Catt or Robeson to me, curious to hear what others think?

You may be right JohnR and ScoutKnives on the Camillus call out, here is a similar farmers jack I found sold on eBay. I don't believe mine has the same grafting blade, I wonder if there were variations?JohnR wrote:Looks to be a very nice knife, I'm thinking early Camillus.Pile Driver wrote:I have my first on the way from a lot of 8 knives for cheap, curious to see the maker that is all I have for pictures go off of. Most were ordinary spey blades PD, but for a short time the “bark loosener “ blade (as Schrade called it) was substituted as a specialty budding blade.
I’m saying Camillus also, even though the shield says it may be Utica.
Robeson , we suppose, never made this pattern . Cattaraugus’ version is on a different frame. See the first page of this thread for a Catt example.
Yours looks good whichever. . Thanks for posting it. I look forward to more pictures.

Re: Farmer's Jacks
It ended up being a Utica, my first Utica knife. Very good quality the bone is amazing and flawless. I'm going to go home at lunch and put a few drops of mineral oil in the pivots and try and free it up some.
Re: Farmer's Jacks
That's a great looking knife that is screaming for oil.
Love that heavy bar shield.

Re: Farmer's Jacks
Trying to work some snap into the main blade, a big chunk of organic material fell out of the well, hopefully it comes back it was seized up for decades probably. Spay blade is nice.
Re: Farmer's Jacks
I thought the shield looked Utica. I haven’t been into my knives a lot lately. That is a good example PD, not much blade loss.
Thanks Joe, some nice knives.

Re: Farmer's Jacks
Very nice. I like UTICA. They were/are located on Noyes Street in Utica, New York. Had I known that in 1988, I would probably be a Utica collector instead of Robeson.
To my knowledge and much to Lyle’s disappointment, Robeson never made a Farmers Jack.
But, there are patterns they did make of which I’m only aware of one extant example, such as a five inch pinch bolstered sleeve board Anglo-Saxon whittler and an almost four inch Gunboat. Same man owns both.

Re: Farmer's Jacks
Wlf, if you do pull out your Utica FJs could you send me a picture of the top down with the blade closed? I'm curious to see how rounded the heel and toe of your main blades tang is? I have been working out tons and tons and tons of grime from mine but I'm still having trouble activating the spring, I have hope because it does seem to lock up at 90% of the way. The spay blade has a squared off tang for a full and half stop, that blade has trap-like snap.wlf wrote:I thought the shield looked Utica. Thanks Joe, some nice knives.
Re: Farmer's Jacks
Spey half stop is typical, but unusual for the pruning blade. I don’t know what you can glean from that picture, but I’ll try. Much is contingent for that comparison.
Not at home now. Pictures later
Charlie , these new revelations keep our ears perked up.

These are either Utica stamped or I believe Utica made. I think without looking among them are a Crown Cut Co., a Cutsure, and a Western States.

Re: Farmer's Jacks
It is a great to see your Farmers Jack collection Lyle. Is there a possibility of a second run from GEC down the road? A selection in stag would get my heart rate racing.

All beauties Lyle ... great to see all those Utica related knives and no doubt easy to see the similarities among them!!
