Not Necessarily A Knife
Re: Not Necessarily A Knife
Wow, I'd love to see a close-up of the blade etchings! Some fantastic craftsmanship
Far be from me to question the all-knowing Dimitri (tongue firmly planted in cheek)
But .. ... .. ... ..
It appears as though the 'deer foot' is the trigger guard /slash/ blade hilt.
Notice the near identical piece on top of the barrel, shorter and turned the opposite direction.
These two pieces would make for the blade hilt.
I submit that the ring is the trigger. The lower deer foot is too far forward to be a trigger.
Pure speculation on my part .. ... ..

Here's one I took a picture of in an antique shop in eastern PA while on vacation a couple of months ago.

I've seen those described as "boarding" pistol/cutlasses, designed to be used in naval battles.
Cool.

Re: Not Necessarily A Knife
I think I agree with Royal.
At first I thought the ring was to turn the cylinder, but now I think the deer's lower leg and hoof are too far forward to be a trigger.
There is a matching leg on top, but they appear to be hinged and foldable.
Here are a couple of cropped photos.

Probably single-action-only. Cock hammer, fire; cock hammer, fire .. .. ..
Again, speculation on my part.

The ring appears to be the trigger and I believe the upper and lower deer legs act as finger guards when it is used as a sword.JMHORobesonsRme.com wrote:I think I agree with Royal.

Re: Not Necessarily A Knife
Robeson late 40's and 50's wood handled knives utilized a laminated wood and phenolic resin material some people know as Pakka Wood.
Robeson called it, "ShurWood".
They even built a separate facity for the manufacture of ShurWood and ShurWood products.
They made knife racks for kitchen cutlery, etc.
These two items showed up on Ebay today, made of ShurWood in Perry, New York.
Not knife related, but part of The Robeson Cutlery Company.

Dave, that's one Super Tie Clip! I probably couldn't wear it here in California because it would scare the bejeebers out of some Tree Hugger!

That tie clip is a dead ringer for this knife:A bowie made by Carvel-Hall ;noted mostly for their kitchen cutlery.Right down to the stars on the quillions.dcgm4 wrote:An oyster shucker and a tie clip made by Charles D. Briddell Inc.

Thanks, Mitch! To me, scaring a tree hugger is just another reason to wear it!MITCH RAPP wrote: Dave, that's one Super Tie Clip! I probably couldn't wear it here in California because it would scare the bejeebers out of some Tree Hugger!
Carvel Hall was originally a trademark if Briddell Inc. The trademark became the property of Towle Manufacturing Co. in 1960 when the Briddell family sold them their company. Here's a photo of the tie clip's box.knife7knut wrote:That tie clip is a dead ringer for this knife:A bowie made by Carvel-Hall ;noted mostly for their kitchen cutlery.Right down to the stars on the quillions.dcgm4 wrote:An oyster shucker and a tie clip made by Charles D. Re: Not Necessarily A Knife
We've been needing a nut cracker for some time. Don't know what happened to the old family pass downs that were in a kitchen drawer all those years, but anyway.....
Imagine my surprise when I came across this one on Ebay the other day.
Nothing like killing two birds with one stone.

Re: Not Necessarily A Knife
I actually have no idea if Robeson made it, although they certainly had the facilities to do so, but it has the appropriate ShurEdge logo and it will crack nuts.
