Lets show some Old and Rare ones.
Re: Lets show some Old and Rare ones.
Nice horseman's knife Mike ... Pretty cool it is all there as many don't survive as well... interesting that it has a glove hook or button hook tool as well - not sure I ever have seen a button hook on a horseman's knife - very ...

Mike L, That's an outstanding Canastota. Mike R. Love the stag on that Sportsman's knife. Lee, I believe the hook blade on Mikes Sportsman's knife is a Bird hook, used for gutting & cleaning a game bird. This is a very interesting thread. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Lets show some Old and Rare ones.
Thanks Barry - perhaps that makes more sense given it was an all-around Sportsman's knife rather than a Horseman's (though both patterns share many of the same multiple blades and tool implements)... In the end not sure I see much difference between a bird hook and a button hook looking at one in another knife1fartsmella wrote:Lee, I believe the hook blade on Mikes Sportsman's knife is a Bird hook, used for gutting & cleaning a game bird.

Lee, The bird hook has a long shaft for reaching into the birds cavity. Button hooks typically have a short shaft, the length of a pen blade.

Thanks Dan, Dimitri Lee, Bill, Roger and Barry. It was super stiff opening everything but they are starting to loosen up a bit.

Re: Lets show some Old and Rare ones.
The knife itself isn't that rare, but with "St.Louis World's Fair"etch,I'm guessing there ain't too many floating around.

That small PB hunter with the fair etch is great …. I want it here's my set from the WF 1904
Re: Lets show some Old and Rare ones.
Nice Bill ... I do believe it is horn ... Side note - Interestingly I have recently read about blond tortoise shell (from the underbelly shell of a tortoise) but have never seen a knife handle use it - that would be the only other thing those handles could be but again never have seen it used and only bringing up blond tortoise shell as an aside... I truly doubt this handle is blond tortoise and would bet the house on hornBWT wrote:Harrison Brothers and Howson, I believe horn handles??? Any help with that will be appreciated!!

Looks like the bolsters took a little rubbing; Glad they left that blade alone.

I really like splotchy character in a scale and the horn does that. I like the colors too, reminds me of Apaloosa bone, and a cool looking knife. Congrats.BWT wrote:Harrison Brothers and Howson, I believe horn handles??? Any help with that will be appreciated!!

Thanks Dimitri, I really like the handles. I have a George Woodhead with very similar handles, they just have that old look.
