Re: Antique Quill Knives
Here's a little quill knife I got as a freebie from kj. I can make out the last four letters of an arched stamp IELD. SHEFFIELD perhaps. Nice ivory scales.

Re: Antique Quill Knives
Hi, I'm new and posted this Quill Knife with Quill Cutter in the Knife Related Q&A section yesterday. Thanks to you guys I actually know that it is a quill cutter. There are more images there and I just uploaded more to my gallery on this forum. Any additional info on this knife would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

Reviving this thread -
Here's one I never posted on this quill knife thread - John Hinchcliffe (ca 1830-1851) Sheffield... According to Tweedale, John Hinchcliffe was well known maker of fancy MOP carved handled knives and especially quill knives. Hinchcliffe was given multiple awards at early expositions in that time period for carved MOP knives. The trademark was the "beehive" in the tang stamp. 3" long closed... No doubt shows that quality and beauty of old Sheffield knives
Thanks for looking!

What a jaw dropper that is, Lee. Quite beautiful.
They sure picked out some nice pearl for it.

LongBlade: That's the prettiest old quill knife I have ever seen.
A pocket knife is still an intimate personal possession of the individual who carries it and consequently deserves the best of materials, finish and workmanship in its production. (Quoted from Boker's 1928 cutlery catalog).

Re: Antique Quill Knives
The "carving" of Mother of Pearl completely amazes me. This knife is so beautifully done as are others I have seen.
Actually, just getting a shield in a handle is a wonder to me. Who gets to peen the pins?

Re: Antique Quill Knives
Here’s another quill for the thread – actually a double end quill from my understanding which according to what I read was more of a mid to late 19th century style though I haven’t seen many…. I think this is the first for this thread too...
IXL George Wostenholm Celebrated Cutlery (1850-1890 according to Goins) – 3” closed with ivory covers in a very slim congress style type frame…

Re: Antique Quill Knives
I have posted this knife before but I think it would qualify as a double ended quill knife. Carved pearl handles and recessed back spring. 3" closed with Wharncliffe and quill blades both marked Baxter & Co.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Awesome carved MOP double-end quill Wayne ... and with a wharncliffe that puts it way over the top ...

Re: Antique Quill Knives
That's quite the knife Wayne. I would think the mop is fragile from being carved and thin. Great condition.

Thanks for the compliments. This old pearl is one of my favorites.
