Re: Old and Obscure Brands
Another one I recently picked up that may be considered an Old and Obscure brand. This one is tang stamped "Sterling Service USA" on both of the blades and the pliers has a marking "PATAPLDFOR" which I assume is "patent applied for. The unit seems to be well made as the plier meshes together tightly. Have not found anything in any of my books. The handles are aluminum, but may not be original. In the photo with the tang stamp, you can see the letters "LT" which are raised above the aluminum surface of the handles. It is 3 5/8" closed length.

OC, nice knife!! Goins says there was a Sterling Service circa 1912-1922, a trademark for Thompson Hardware, can't help you more than that,if I don't read it in a book I know anyhing. Thanks for sharing.

Nice knife, originally it had bone handles. Valley forge/ Boker made them.
Do a search for Valley Forge plier-knife and you will find some
I have one but no camera right now

Re: Old and Obscure Brands
Thanks for the help. Now with that info I have found some pictures of originals and can see what this one would have originally looked like. I picked it up at a gun show over the weekend from a $5 an item your choice box. It sure looks a lot better in the pictures with bone handles than in aluminum. Also found an old thread on AAPK from 2011.Miller Bro's wrote:Nice knife, originally it had bone handles. Valley forge/ Boker made them.

WM.ENDERS MTG
CO USA.
I don't find this exact stamp in my Goins book but all 3 blades are stamped and main blade has "oak leaf" etched in the blade. Mop handles.

Re: Old and Obscure Brands
I posted this earlier on another thread, but maybe it qualifies here too. J Howarth, Sheffield. Mumbleypeg got me some dates. Say roughly 1920-present. So I have no idea yet where this one falls. J Howarth made hand tools as well as knives. I've just started searching for info so I don't know much yet. But I think it's neat, and I'd never heard of them til I came across this knife.
Re: Old and Obscure Brands
I'm not sure how obscure this is, but I traded for this last weekend because I liked the proud wood handles-
Germania Cutlery Works. Levine's book says they made knives from 1892-1937.

Nice Lan, just think of the stories those old wood handles could tell you if they could talk!!!

Re: Old and Obscure Brands
Here is a tang stamp I've not seen before.
JOHN
CHATILLON
& sons NY
I think it is a moose pattern with smooth bone handles and steel liners and bolsters. Clip side bolster is larger than the Spey side. 4 1/4" long closed. Still snaps like a gator. Anybody else have one or information about the company? I think they made scales for weighing but not sure what else. Thanks Steve B.
PS. Sorry for the fuzzy pictures. Gotta get a real camera.

Re: Old and Obscure Brands
Nice knife and love the handles. Goins says they made knives, cleavers, and other butcher tools from 1835 till about 1937 when they stopped making knives, but still in business at the time of Goins printing. Hope that helps.
