I have no idea what that means Harold, I thought it was gunk in there. ::facepalm::
Did a quick search. I'll clean it up and see if it is a magnifying lens. Thanks Harold ::handshake::

Enjoyed the revelation experienced by ESPN77. Great to witness.

Probably the easiest way to pick up a knife with a Stanhope lens is through Anheuser-Busch knives. Not sure the new ones have them, but the older ones have a photo of Aldolphus Busch in them.

I was visiting an elderly couple years ago and the lady showed me a small collection of bone and ivory sewing trinkets or implements and half of them contained a Stanhope viewer, of which she was unaware.

They all contained scenes from the St. Louis World's Fair.

A buddy acquired an old knife for me, can't find a dang thing about it other than it was an old cutlery company...Any help is appreciated in my research.
Truthfully, I just brought it because of the beautiful pearl handles and it looked old.

Ok I felt bad about the wise crack so I did some searching. ::facepalm::

It's a "VC" knife. Or "VOM CLEFF & Co."
The word "vom" means "from" in German.

Here are 2 pics & a link. That should get you started. ::handshake:: ::super_happy::

I'll see If I can come up with anything else. ::handshake::

Edit: I have also read "VOM CLEFF & CO / LION CUTLERY" several times and NY once. ?

Maybe one of the experts with Cutlery books at home can tell you more now that we know the name on the Tang stamp of your knife. Your's is the one on the left side. (Click on the picture to enlarge.)
Anyways, here the different Stamps. ::tu::

Don’t know just how obscure it is, but I just picked up this well-worn knife marked Alfred & Son Celebrated Cutlery.

Well, you've got a beauty there, William Adams. Nice catch.
Goin's encyclopedia states:
Alfred & Son celebrated cutlery, 1850-1875

Of course it has some blade loss; why wouldn't it?
It has some beautiful old wood.
A real find!

Welcome to the forum.

Obscure German knife Co?....

Alright friends, I've received my first fishing knife that was picked up off the bay. I have tried to research the brand and haven't had much luck.
Are there any others out there that might have one or more of this knife makers pieces in their collection? Anyone have history or know about how old this might be. It's a solid one, very clean and doesn't look to have been used. Not thinking that it's too old but y'a never know....
Thanks!
