Vintage Tool Kit Knives & Folding Eating Sets
Re: Vintage Tool Kit Knives & Folding Eating Sets
Thanks Mike - do you think the instructions were hand typed for each knife? When did ditto and mechanical copying become widely available.

Nice set MikeObsidianEdge wrote:Any idea how old that Camillus is MB?
I got this a few weeks ago. The seller spelled "Ulery" wrong so it was kind of under the radar. Made by Napanoch. The ad is from Goins.
The Camillus is from the 1930's at least

Re: Vintage Tool Kit Knives & Folding Eating Sets
Here is a 3 piece set with ivory handles but the carry case is missing. Spoon & fork look like silver but have no hallmark so maybe silver plate ?
There are no markings on any of these 3 pieces. They could be from Germany Britain or U.S.A. Any thoughts about this ?

Fork and spoon look like Nickle to me, overall I would say it was made in England.
Nice set, thanks for sharing it

Re: Vintage Tool Kit Knives & Folding Eating Sets
Thank you D. Was it common for British 'travel sets' to be unmarked ?
As for age, my understanding is that most of these sets are from before WW 1.

Roland, I posted a Henckels set similar to yours in this thread. At least, I think I did.
I posted this in the Ulster thread but adding it here as well.

Re: Vintage Tool Kit Knives & Folding Eating Sets
Mike you do find the rare ones and always top examples. I have not seen an Ulster slot knife before. I have not looked it up but i imagine "The Maine" was a naval vessel ? Lovely condition and obviously never cleaned or buffed.
Although Dimitri suggests my travel set could well be British, i think German more likely because they put corkscrews on 'everything'. The Brits were drinking gin and didn't need a corkscrew.

Wow, Dimitri, that's beautiful, even the box is near mint. Was obviously owned by a careful person. I have seen the same Ulery knife without tools or case. It looks like Ulery sold a high quality product.

One of these marked Japan was posted on the first page so this is just a 'me too' post. Same as the one posted by Ray (knife7knut).

Roland, the USS Maine was allegedly sunk by Spanish forces off of the coast of Cuba in 1898, which sparked the Spanish-American war there. I think this was made 1920s or so. The fork is an older style.
Wow MB! Hard to imagine there's a nicer Ultery set left in existence than yours.

Thanks Roland, it was never used as far as I can tell. Looks like someone bought it took it home and it sat in a drawer for decades in it's original box.kootenay joe wrote:Wow, Dimitri, that's beautiful, even the box is near mint. Re: Vintage Tool Kit Knives & Folding Eating Sets
Actually i think the "decades" are close to 100 years that the knife sat patiently, hoping someone would come along and show some interest in it. 1919 is given as the year Ulery ceased as a business.

Re: Vintage Tool Kit Knives & Folding Eating Sets
You gonna post your latest find here D ? I don't see one like it in this thread
Re: Vintage Tool Kit Knives & Folding Eating Sets
Here is a knife and fork set. The purse is kidskin with a felted exterior. Handles are French ivory. Tang stamp is an anchor with back-to-back Fs for Franz Frenzel Cutlery (Germany, late 19th Century to ~1930). Found this at the NCCA show last April in Mystic, CT.

Re: Vintage Tool Kit Knives & Folding Eating Sets
I have had this folding fork for many years, hoping that the missing implements(s) would show up eventually. Has not happened yet.
The handle is so beautiful, I could not pass up the opportunity to acquire it.
No makers name, however there is Hallmark engravements on the fork spine.
Usually, folding eating implements have the manufacturer on the knife tangs only, so.....if you are missing the knife, you are out of luck discovering who made your set.
I have two well detailed Hallmark books that have given me success in the past to dating and manufacturer of many English knives that I have obtained over the years.
Unfortunately, the Hallmarks on the fork have given me zero results in identifying this beautiful fork.
The Hallmarks are three initials only: J R & S. with no date or mfg. hallmarks. A mystery to me.
Going out on a limb, (A very fragile limb) Joseph Rodgers & Sons entered my mind. We know that Rogers famous Corporate Mark granted in 1764 and registered in England and abroad included the Star and Maltese Cross. Unfortunately, those marking are not on this item, therefore I can not confirm its originality.
After 1800, as the reputation of Rodgers production grew, new lines were begun. In that year, the manufacture of table cutlery commenced.
If anyone can add to its authenticity, please post.
