Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. Little Valley N.Y. 1886-1963

The Cattaraugus Cutlery Company was started by John Champlin and his son Tint in 1882. It was first incorporated under the name J.B.F. Champlin and Son as a wholesale distribution company based in Little Valley, New York. The business proved to be a successful endeavor, and it soon branched into a knife production company named Cattaraugus.

That's the best I can do right now, until I get my digital camera back. All I currently have to take pictures with is my cell phone, and it sucks. Here's the only other picture that I didn't post, don't think it's going to help you any though.

I took a few more pictures last night, just can't get a clear tang stamp or blade etch picture with my cell phone camera. I think the etch says "Stearns & Chenoweth" then "Hand Forged (Warranted or Patented)" on the blade. By the way, is this ebony or cocobolo? Thanks!

Kathy asked me about taking the kids on a vacation this summer, and where I would like to go. I said I don't know about the kids, but if it was up to me, I would go to Iowa and see JACKNIFEBEN's collection.....

Whittler that is 3 1/4 closed with potassium permanganate Rogers Indian Trail bone. Cochran & Alcock, Hardware, Carlisle, Penna., l904. (google books) Jigging is nice and crisp. Blades appear to have original finish and are actually sharp.

Pretty minty except for a small crack on the pin under the shield and some initials scratched into the pile side of the main blade.

Thanks guys. It was a "buy it now" on eBay. Pleasantly surprised on the condition when I got it in hand.

Just added a new Catt to my collection, a 22689 Senator Pen with green(?) bone handles. Interesting that the larger blade doesn't have half-stops but the smaller one does. It has a Riddiford Bros. shield, anyone know what that means?

This would be a perfect EDC in my opinion but I'm not gonna do it.

Thanks!

Just saw that I forgot to post another shot of my 21286 also. In the first picture you can see a little of the blade etch. Sorry I can't get a better picture of it.

Nice knife. Google books lists Riddiford Bros. in a 1911 report for Chicago. Looks like it made brushes and brooms.

I was wondering if any of you Cattaraugus collectors have a original Cattaraugus knife opener for sale or trade? I collect openers, and have been looking for a Cattaraugus for over 20 years now. I know there is a wanted forum here, but I have'nt had any luck there. :) Thanks, Mark.

I forgot to mention to double click on the pen knife, to view the etch and a unique tang stamp - the knife also has milled liners. I have actually owned this one for several years.
