Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. Little Valley N.Y. 1886-1963

The Cattaraugus Cutlery Company was started by John Champlin and his son Tint in 1882. It was first incorporated under the name J.B.F. Champlin and Son as a wholesale distribution company based in Little Valley, New York. The business proved to be a successful endeavor, and it soon branched into a knife production company named Cattaraugus.

This is an old Catt. that came in a group of knives, from a guy whose mother did volunteer work at a church thrift shop. All of the knives were left in the pockets of clothing donated to the church over a long period of time. I was lucky to be the first fella to cross paths with him at a Duck Decoy show back about 15 years ago. There was 15 to 20 knives in a plastic basket, I bought them all. This Catt was one of them. Octagon shaped bolsters with the thinnest Indian Trail bone slabs. Each side is the thickness of a dime. It's hard to imagine how this knife was pinned together without cracking the bone. This is one of my favorite knives. Barry

Barry, very nice and unusual knife, can't recall ever seeing another.

Put this jack in another Catt thread but I think it belonged here also, this one shows little use.

So Charlie, what did you get out of that? Is Ovalhole packing simply a mathematical concept? I never did see areference to a company with that name. ::shrug::

Here is the link. It's possible that the company intended the knife to be used on the job to cut their packing to size. As a snipe in the USN I packed a few steam valves to stop steam leakage. The company is the Hollow Center Packing Company Cleveland, OH.

Happy to do it Greg. I needed to it down to satisfy my curiosity on my knife. There are many of the comp or rubber handled Catts out there, yours is the first bone handled I've seen on the 'net.
