Just received this 3 1/8" swell-center, equal end pen with pearl handles, nice full, blades, but a few spiders here and there.

Both master spear and pen are marked, TERRIER / CUTLERY/ ROCHESTER, N.Y.

There is a dog's head logo on the back of the master and the pattern number 305 / 722 on the back of the pen.

As I've explained previously, Robeson reversed the two groups of three digits in their pattern number on their Terrier knives, so this pattern with a Robeson stamp would be marked 722305.

Remember, Robeson only produced Terrier knives from 1910 to 1916, so this little knife is a hundred years old.

I was alerted to the Ebay auction for this knife by a fellow AAPK member, to whom I will be forever grateful.

These photos should expand with a left click.

Thanks.

I find it interesting that a choil was not cut into either blade.

I have seen that on a couple of other older Robesons.

I don't know when or how that process occurs in the manufacture of a knife, but it got omitted on this one.

Now, do I leave it as is or do I cut a choil into the blades?

Great find, Charlie, lovely knife! ::tu:: Wondering about cutting choils into the blades is a joke, right? I have a couple of old Case's, still with the factory edge, that never had choils cut into them. Steve Pfeifer said that happens occasionally.

My tongue-in-cheek question about putting choils on the blades was prompted by an exchange I had with Bernard Levine at The Oregon Knife Show once, when I showed him a beautiful, mint, circa-1930's Robeson knife. Robeson brown bone, Robeson tang stamps, blade etch, etc.

He turned it over in his hands, opened and closed the blades, handed it back to me and said, "Fake. No knife would have ever left the Robeson factory without choils on the blades."

So, it's been a running joke of mine since.

Interesting comment from Mr. Levine, was he joking or serious?

Oh, he was very serious.
I'd show you the knife, but I no longer own it, so it's not mine to discuss.

That's a nice old jack.

I saw a similar one on Ebay recently. Could that be it?

It's probably the same one. I got this one on Ebay.
I wonder why there is no Terrier head stamp on pile side of tang.

I've got over twenty Terriers and not all have a Terrier head logo and not all have a pattern number.

The lack of either does not bother me a bit.

But, I do like that dog head to be on there.

Joe, your Terrier Jack Knife is sweet!

Here are pictures of my one and only (so far :) ) Terrier which I have because it is a Cattle knife - I wasn't seeking a Terrier specifically. However, it is very well made and now I pay more attention looking for the brand. It does not have the dog stamp or a pattern number.

That is a nice old Terrier and its lack of the dog's head logo or a pattern number do not bother me one bit.

That's Robeson's 1905 patented punch blade. The bone is right and the shield is one that they used.

I'd be pleased to own that knife. If you ever think about selling or trading , I'd be interested. I have nice Robeson replacements for that one that you might like better. :D

Here is an Ebay auction for a Terrier knife that I've never seen before.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-3-Blade ... Sw5cNYVcL2

It is a large 4", at least, "Carpenter's Knife" as stamped into the green onyx celluloid handles.

Unfortunately, it has seen a great deal of use and it looks as though the celluloid is about to self-destruct.

I have seen this pattern before because I have an almost mint example that is stamped "ROBESON" instead of "TERRIER".

I guess this gives me a good idea of the age of my knife since Terriers were only made from 1910 to 1916.

As the pattern number on the Robeson is 832232, the number on the Terrier should be 232832.

Some of the auction pics followed by my Robeson.

I am enjoying looking at all these nice Terrier knives!

Here is mine. 4 1/2" English Jack pattern. Blades are both stamped Terrier/Cutlery/Rochester, N.Y. and the master has the dog head on the reverse side. The second blade has the pattern number 151622 on the reverse side.

That's a handful of Terrier cutlery right there.

The 151 and 119 were Robeson's big English jacks.

I've never seen either as a Terrier.
