Terrier Cutlery Company
Re: Terrier Cutlery Company
The photos below are of a three blade terrier the pattern is 069 632 The master blade is a spear and it has a punch blade but the center blade is a mystery, a broken clip point made into a screwdriver ? That doesn’t make much sense to me either; as you can see by the blade thickness it isn’t going to cut anything. Ideas anyone?
Re: Terrier Cutlery Company
Really do love worm grooves on these old knives which leads me to have a respectful difference of opinion with you Charlie. I know you mentioned an earthworm as a possible inspiration for the grooves with what looks like segments . I think rather the inspiration might have come from damage created by wood boring beetles. The wood on a cross section looks very similar to the grooves on the old knives. Sadly will probably never know for sure with so much information lost with time.

Re: Terrier Cutlery Company
So, do we start calling it "Wood Borer Bone"?
I have no idea who coined "Worm Groove Bone". Might have been Dewey Ferguson.
Cattaraugus called it, "Indian Trail".
It wasn't made by either Robeson or Catt, but supplied to them by Rogers or somebody else.
As to your three blade jack above, I suspect it looked like this:

Re: Terrier Cutlery Company
Ha ha no to the wood borer bone Charlie but I guess I should have explained in a little more detail. The larval stage often does the damage and in the old days they were called “wood worms” so we can keep worm groove name ! But your idea sounds good too . . Thank you for the pics of the three blade that helped ! Is that a Robeson or Terrier ? The pattern I assume also 069 ? Thanks again for your input .
Re: Terrier Cutlery Company
Here is a pic of damage. Looks pretty similar I think no segments visible like on knives but some damage shows it and the larva are very segmented

Re: Terrier Cutlery Company
That is a Robeson. I have seen it with three different company’s advertising.
I have seen it with bone handles, but by far, most often with ivoroid advertising handles.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen a Terrier in that pattern.
Have seen earlier versions with a Presto-Lite key in the end of the wire-scaper/screw-driver blade. Frankly, surprised your Terrier doesn’t have one.
Some refer to these as “ Automobilist’s Knives”, though Robeson did make a four blade automobilist’s knife with a different blade configuration.

I have a nice 5 inch EO 92 622. Here are a few pics. What sort of value does it have?
Re: Terrier Cutlery Company
Nice looking, big knife, Unclemrbig.
I'm curios about the worn handles and the blades not so much.

A well used and carried Terrier 092 giant EZ Opener that has been heavily cleaned.
Robeson made the pattern as a Robeson and as a Terrier.
I have a Terrier with the same pattern number, but with different blades.
I am not an appraiser and usually decline to put values on knives belonging to others. I do not follow the market or trends.
It’s not worth what it could have been. The cleaning hurts it.

Here is a very old Jack Knife Ben with a Robeson/ Terrier punch blade. Old Ben only contracted knives from the best.

I have the same knife bit not nearly as nice!RobesonsRme.com wrote: ↑Sun Jan 26, 2020 7:46 pm I was sitting in a parking lot last week while my wife was seeing one of her doctors and thought I’d check my e-mail on my cell phone.
I had a message from Lloyd Duff alerting me to a nice looking Terrier on EBay.
I looked at it, found it desirable and tried to buy it via the Buy-It-Now option, but could not as I was not logged into EBay on the phone and had no idea what my password might be. I know. Go figure.
Three hours later, when I finally got to my PC, the knife was still listed and I bought it, hoping it was as nice as it appeared.
This is what I received.
It is a 3 1/4” pearl handled Terrier Congress Whittler with a sheep foot master and two pens. The blades are close to mint with crocus polish on the front and glaze finish on the back. They all have half-stops and audible snaps opening, closing and at the half-stops.
Master is stamped TERRIER / CUTLERY / ROCHESTER, N.Y. And the pens are both marked TERRIER / CUTLERY. There is a dog’s head on the back of the master and and the pattern number 21 / 732 in two lines on one of the pens. That equates to a Robeson six digit number of 732021, which would be an early shape pattern at 021.
There is a little scratch on the front handle, otherwise they are in great condition.
Interestingly, after I received the knife, the seller listed another just like it, but not as nice. I looked at his list of auctions and he has five Congress Whittlers on EBay, all of different manufacturers. I found that very interesting.

It’s a Barlow.
Hard to tell what the blade was originally.
Nice.
You just keep finding them.

Re: Terrier Cutlery Company
Some weeks back, I received a private message from Mike Losicco, asking if I would be interested in buying a Terrier he had for sale.
It was a nice knife, but I told him due to recent unexpected medical expenses re’ Sarah, I was not in a position to purchase any knives.
He expressed his understanding and best wishes for Sarah and that was that.
Or so I thought.
A week or so later, this arrived in the mail.
It was from Mike.
It is a cocobolo handled hawkbill knife with bail.
Great snap, opening and closing.
Some patina and spotting on the blade, but it dates 1910 to 1916, so that’s expected.
Interestingly, the dog’s head logo is on the front of the tang and the mark on the back.
This is the only knife I have with this mark, but others here have examples of same.
A great knife and a wonderful and generous gesture from Mike Losicco.

Re: Terrier Cutlery Company
Yes, it is and I’m not exactly sure what it means.
Robeson had showrooms in New York City at one time, Fifth Avenue, I believe.
Not sure if that’s what the stamp refers to or was there an office or showroom for Terrier Cutlery Company, as well?
Not sure we’ll ever know the answer.
