Restoring a blade

Post by Resophonatic »

I acquired this case fixed blade. Obviously someone has done a lot of damage to the blade. I have watched several youtube videos trying to gain some information about cleaning it up. I am
looking for suggestions from someone who has tried this sort of thing. Can I do this with a dremel tool? I also have a Camillus USMC blade that needs some help. If there is already a forum thread dealing with this just point me there. Thank you in advance. Any advice will be considered and appreciated.

Here's a good tutorial viewtopic.php?f=38&t=47909
This post is about folding knives but you should be able to transfer the pertinent parts to fixed blades.

That post is just one of several knife cleaning posts included here

Your old Case hunter has a chrome plated blade. The chrome works well for corrosion resistance but when poorly sharpened the scratches in the chrome plating look awful. to remove the scratches you would need to remove all the chrome and the knife will never have it's original chrome shine to it again. I have seen plenty of the old Case chrome plated hunters which have had the chrome removed on a belt sander and with a nice finish but they just don't ever have that shine. So, if you want to clean it up for a user it will be nice. "Restored" to near original look will not be possible unless you have chrome plating abilities. Cool old knife, I love the pre-war American made hunters.

Thanks Gunsil. I am going to keep it so I am not trying to get the shine back. I just want to make it look better. On another thread you told me that this knife was made by Kinfolks. So if I understand correctly it is a Case Bradford manufactured for them by Kinfolks.

Your knife is a 323-5" pattern and was made by Case in Bradford PA. after Case discontinued having knives made in Little Valley by Kinfolks.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Wayne is correct, that knife was made after the Kinfolks era. Were it made by Kinfolks it would not be chrome plated and it would have an aluminum guard rather than a nickel one.

Thank you Wayne and Gunsil. I misunderstood the statement in the previous thread.
