KaBar info please

Post by Takeacip »

Hi! I have 2 KaBar. The smaller blade the rust/patina is to where I can’t really read what type it is… and what it’s worth… the longer one a lot of people have … my concern is the guard it’s really rusty it looks the same on both sides … what should I do…clean it up? is it worth selling as is? If so how much? Thank you for your time

The smaller knife is a KA-BAR model 338, called "Bearcat" in the early brochures. Value? Both knives are so rusted/pitted that their collector vaalue isn't much except as examples. A little light oil and 0000 steel wool will clean off the active rust although the guard on the MK2 will be very pitted when rust is removed. On the thick rust you can scrape away at it with an old knife or paint scraper then use the steel wool. Steel wool will not remove any solid metal, only the rust. The end result will be that you have pitted steel without the active rust which will only get worse without it being removed.
