Thanks for the kind words Roland;I do like all types of knives.
The Rodgers bowie I found quite by accident in an antique shop in Marshall Michigan.I had driven there to attend a car show with my Safari wagon but it was rained out. I stopped to get a coffee for the trip home and next to the coffee shop was an antique shop.
Walking in at first glance it looked a bit disappointing;mostly new stuff and phony antiques. In the back there was a counter with a box of pocket knives on it and I asked to look at them. The proprietor said OK and brought out another box of knives as well. While I was looking through them he asked if I was into bowie knives. I told him I like all kinds of knives and he proceeds to drag the Rodgers out from under a pile of stuff in one of the display cases.
I wound up negotiating a price of $225 for it and drove home with a BIG smile on my face. Showed it to my friend Guy who was president of the Bowie Knife Collectors at the time and he figured it was probably worth around $1200 or so.
The James bowie I bought from a gun collector for $300 and thought I probably had overpaid a bit for it but Jim Taylor said that was a fair price for one with the original sheath which made me feel a little better.
I don't recall what i paid for the Bower but I think it was around $25. The Silver Stag and the Colt I bought for $60 apiece a couple years ago.
Here are some closeup pictures of the Fred James knife and the blade on the Colt. Also a Manhattan Cutlery Co bowie from around 1890 or so and a Cogswell & Harrison(high end London gunsmiths)double edged dagger from about the same period.Also four more knives by Emil Voos;Solingen #448;R.J.Richter;and a Hubertus hunting dagger.

Very Nice Al Mar knives, especially like the top one. I just finished this 7 3/4" hunting knife up for a customer, I made it with O-1 tool steel and Himalayan ram horn for a handle. It kind of looks like marble when polished. I finished it up one day last week and sold it to the first guy that looked at it. Terry

Great knife Terry! I love the look of ram's horn for handles. I only have one and it is a switchblade of all things!

I have not checked this thread for awhile. What a lot of excellent knives. That Al Mar big Fighter ? Bowie ? is impressive to look at, very !
Is it heavy in hand ?
And Terry i very much like your ram's horn Hunter, handle shape & blade all have good 'flow' into a knife that stands out & speaks to one. I like this the best of all your knives i have seen posted here. I bet the owner is thrilled.
And a Ruana is never out of place showroom or hunting camp. Cal have you ever used one hunting ? How did it go ?
And finally Anton Wingen posted by Scott: Wingen made the best of that Bowie-Hunter style that was very popular in 1950's-1970's.
I have a large double Hunter set by Wingen. I keep it because i think it is the best example of that style of knife from that mid 20th century time period.

kj, Although a substantial knife, I find the Al Mar is well balanced moving easily and quickly in the hand. Nor is it distracting when carried on the hip.

Lon Humphrey brute de forge drop point that I just picked up a week or so ago. Haven't used it yet but looking forward to putting it to work on a 4 day camping trip thats coming up. I dyed the sheath to darken it and did some wood burned design work on it too, plus added the leather lanyard with a deer antler bead. It is a hefty knife and I bought with the intention of using it, I believe it will take whatever I can throw at it.

I've likely posted this one before but I had to dig it out to re-photograph as I am sending some pictures to the company whose name is stamped on the tang to see if I can glean any information about it.
The knife has been in my collection for about 35 years and was part of a huge military collection a friend of mine purchased and sold off the civilian knives mostly to me.
Double edged dagger with what looks like a carving set handle that has a silver butt cap.Stamped,"Cogswell & Harrison Co. Gunmakers London".
The company is still in business manufacturing high end shotguns and has been for over 200 years. I doubt they made the knife in house;probably contracted with a Sheffield cutler. I've never seen another knife with this stamp and their website shows no evidence they ever had any. Hopefully I will hear from them soon.

Just finished this one up, I tried to copy the blade design of a WW11 Western W31 but didn't put the fuller in it , so the blade grind is about all that resembles a W31 Parachustist knife. But it does have cocobolo wood handles like the original and measures about the same but no alum. butt cap. Kind of fun to make an unusual blade shape and I have it sold already. All I had to go by is the catalog page from 1945. the sheath is my own design. Terry
