Mason, that is a beautiful Helle! Do you know the vintage or anything else about it? I haven't seen a Helle with a sheath like that before. Does it say anything on the sheath?

Very nice knife, thanks for showing it. ::tu::

Thanks, and while I have some Nordic knives I know little about them and have learned much from your posts. I do not know the age of this knife but would guess a few decades old at most. There are several numbers on the back side of the sheath next to a logo which is a "T K within a circle" All of which are stamped into the metal.

Is there another thread that exists to post other Scandinavian knives with hand guards ?

Thanks for this link and I will post there soon.

Below is a rare 1936 ad for Puukko knives from Finland and a similar example (No. C-133 horse head) in brass instead of nickel silver. The knife has the same "Made in Finland" etch on the blade as in the ad.

A nice one from Kauhava, Finland. There was a matching smaller puukko in the front slot of that sheath at one time.

Yes, unfortunately it seems that many puukko knives and also German Hirschfanger hunting swords are seen missing the small side knife. I guess I could carry a pencil in there for now. :)

Here are some photos of a puukko Joonas Kallioniemi just finished for me. The handle is made from mammoth tooth.

Thanks TJ. I like the tradition and how the puukkoseppas work, forging the blade and creating the knife and sheath, doing everything themselves. There are a lot of talented knife makers in Finland and the tradition is strong and being passed on to the young makers like Joonas.

I can't wait to see this one, it's still in Finland.

A very nice video of Kustaa Lammi making a puukko:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfxDwsSaDLQ

Kustaa Lammi (1901 - 2001), son of the old master of Finnish knife making Juho Lammi who made the first horsehead puukko, started making knives at a early age. When he was only 10 years old, he sold his first knife at the Kauhava railway station. Since then he was in the knife making business. Kustaa Lammi made his last knife at the age of 95.

A new one, again by Joonas Kallioniemi. This one in gray ebonite. At 23 Joonas has incredible skill and knowledge and is destined to be one of the greatest smiths ever in Finland.
