Thank you for the info and comments...This is a knife I plan on passing down to my son in a few years and wanted to get a more accurate history. Thanks again.

I received this puukko today, a gift from Mike(vikingdog). The puukko was made by Mile Leko from Croatia and has a Pekka Tuominen blade, the handle is Mopane an African hardwood and the sheath is a perfect match. The fit and finish is perfect and feels really good in hand. Thanks again Mike ::tu::

You're welcome Bill. I'm very happy with Mile's work. If anyone wants to see his work he posts it on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BarbudoKnives?ref=ts&fref=ts

Been eyeballin' this thread for a while and after reading some of the extra sites that have been included, I would like to get some opinions about a horse head type. Been in the family as long as I can remember. Mother said it belonged to one of my older cousins, I'm 66, it's been around longer than I have. The knife is about 7 3/4" long, with the blade being 3 7/8". Also when you hold it up to a light the 4 dark colored rings in the handle are an amber/orange translucent color. Any thoughts on this knife? Treefarmer

There have been some great knives shown in this thread, and thanks "vikingdog" for such good information. Here is a more recent example which has "Helle Fabrikker Norway" engraved on the blade. The embossed floral metal handle with felt lining is quite attractive.

Mason, that is a beautiful Helle! Do you know the vintage or anything else about it? I haven't seen a Helle with a sheath like that before. Does it say anything on the sheath?

Very nice knife, thanks for showing it. ::tu::

Thanks, and while I have some Nordic knives I know little about them and have learned much from your posts. I do not know the age of this knife but would guess a few decades old at most. There are several numbers on the back side of the sheath next to a logo which is a "T K within a circle" All of which are stamped into the metal.

Is there another thread that exists to post other Scandinavian knives with hand guards ?

Thanks for this link and I will post there soon.

Below is a rare 1936 ad for Puukko knives from Finland and a similar example (No. C-133 horse head) in brass instead of nickel silver. The knife has the same "Made in Finland" etch on the blade as in the ad.

A nice one from Kauhava, Finland. There was a matching smaller puukko in the front slot of that sheath at one time.

Yes, unfortunately it seems that many puukko knives and also German Hirschfanger hunting swords are seen missing the small side knife. I guess I could carry a pencil in there for now. :)

Here are some photos of a puukko Joonas Kallioniemi just finished for me. The handle is made from mammoth tooth.

Thanks TJ. I like the tradition and how the puukkoseppas work, forging the blade and creating the knife and sheath, doing everything themselves. There are a lot of talented knife makers in Finland and the tradition is strong and being passed on to the young makers like Joonas.

I can't wait to see this one, it's still in Finland.
