Re: American Made Hunting & Fishing Fixed Blade Knives
Is the handle on that thistle knife made of wood?
Re: American Made Hunting & Fishing Fixed Blade Knives
I don't have in hand yet but I think it is wood based on the checking and it just looks like wood. According to ebay I should know this Friday.
My reference books on hand are handicapped by a lack of Union Cutlery/Kabar information for the fixed blade side of their business. Can anyone recommend a good source?

I also would like to know. I have a thistle knife marked Henry Sears; it is a composite material, but according to Bernard Levine, this was a common pattern turn of the century and probably first imported from the UK; Wooden handles were the norm, I think.steve99f wrote:I don't have in hand yet but I think it is wood based on the checking and it just looks like wood. Would you describe that as a Kephart variation?jmh58 wrote:Thanks Steve.. It is a L.T.Wright knife.. Same guy..steve99f wrote:John that looks robust for sure. Reminds me of some of the BHK knives I've seen.

Here's a couple you don't see too often. Schrade cut co. Made by kinfolks and a WWII era camillus army/navy pilots knife.

Cal, its a wood handle, came in 2 days earlier than expected.
The sheath was very stiff and dirty. A little saddle soap and Pecard's did wonders. Not an original sheath though as gunsil says the sheath was marked like the blade etch, "Kamper". Very pleased with it overall, the knife is in excellent condition. I think this was carried more than it was used. Looking at the checking with a magnifier, the diamonds are pretty well still pointed and the blade still has some factory finish on it as well as a decent etch. No signs of improper sharpening or other abuse. Couple of pictures for the record.

Couple of great looking knives EBM. How old is the Schrade? Do the tang stamp charts for Schrade track with their pocket knives?Eye Brand Man wrote:Here's a couple you don't see too often. Schrade cut co. Made by kinfolks and a WWII era camillus army/navy pilots knife.

You know i'm not to sure if the tang stamps on fixed blades track with the folders Maybe. I'm guessing this one's pre war . Super nice thistle top by the way Nice condition on that one, with the etch still visible. I really like the old Union Cut Co fixed blades.steve99f wrote:Couple of great looking knives EBM. EBM, Steve that is a show. Really like the handle on the Kamper.
Re: American Made Hunting & Fishing Fixed Blade Knives
Thanks guys. Doglegg, that handle feels good in the hand. Its the first pre Kabar Union Cutlery Co I've had, not disappointed. Again, thanks for looking and your feedback.

I found out at the Lewisberg PA show that these handles on the Kamper model are NOT wood but an early synthetic. A gentleman at the show had one like mine with a piece knocked out of the handle in the checked section. The handle is hollow and the broken edges did not look like wood. Sorry about the incorrect statement earlier.

Re: American Made Hunting & Fishing Fixed Blade Knives
I haven't ran across a Cattaraugus quite like this, but from what I've read this was probably made by Kinfolk.
Is that handle material celluloid? The blade shape reminds me of a Marble's Woodcraft. I like the ricasso stamp too, they made some beautiful knives.
Anyone with an extra Cattaraugus sheath laying around that would fit this blade shoot me a PM with a picture, thanks!

Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

Nice old Cat! I think it is from Kinfollks as gunsil says the aluminum guards are a tell for a Kinfolks knife. Can't help with the sheath.
