American Made Hunting & Fishing Fixed Blade Knives
Re: American Made Hunting & Fishing Fixed Blade Knives
The Opinels slice better. Need to get you a big ol' #10. Case is great in hand though. Needed to be flattened to do anything other than cut meat well. You can see how rounded the hollow grind shoulder is. Thanks for the kind words.

I like the modifications, especially the Schrade. An aura of its history, of its use between it and you, seems perceptible. A tool with soul. For those disgusted by seeing modified knives, here's an original one

Nice knives!
I have a few of these mostly by Case but a few other makers as well.
I always liked these fish De-scaler knives.

Re: American Made Hunting & Fishing Fixed Blade Knives
Hi, Here's some pics of what I have and I'd like to find a few more to round out the collection. I would like to find a Case Bradford and a CASE (block capital letters) in the 0600F pattern with good greenbone handles. I also need a Kinfolks and Kin-Foe in greenbone, same pattern. Or others that look to be a Case contract knife with greenbone. I also would be interested in a Ka-Bar 659-5 (or 6) with stag handles. These are tough knives to find and any help getting some of them run down would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks to all, Eric

M-B,
Thank you, I'm honored that you like them. I have quite a few more with different handle materials, but these are all the bone handled ones I have. I'd sure appreciate it if you have any duplicates that you are willing to sell. If so, email me through this site; I'm putting in quite a bit of time on the computer presently. I've had quite a run for my money fighting cancer for the last ten months but I think this last surgery got it out of me; at least I'm feeling better and more positive about the whole rigamarole and that means I can be more active playing with the knives.
Thanks so much, Eric
Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Here's some of the other fish knives I have that are not bone handles. For those of us who grew up prior to all the deep fat frying these knives were commonly used instead of filet knives; the fish were then either pan fried or baked.

I was wondering where you were, I had not seen you post in quite some time. I hope you are doing better and they were able to get rid of it, no matter how you look at it cancer sucks!ole_muddy wrote:I'm putting in quite a bit of time on the computer presently. Glad to see you back posting again and your interest in knives has returned
I only have a half dozen or so and you have them all posted above, you got me beat on these type of knives!ole_muddy wrote: I have quite a few more with different handle materials, but these are all the bone handled ones I have. Here is one that I picked up recently, looks hardly used, I have very few with the original sheath so I was happy to see the drop in sheath came with this one.
Too bad someone cut through the front side of the sheath with the knife blade

Re: American Made Hunting & Fishing Fixed Blade Knives
It's gotten to the point that I'm having trouble finding anything that strikes both my interest and wallet. There's nothing on ebay right now that I would buy to keep in the collection and I've looked it over extensively. Anything else that I've been buying will go back up for sale later this fall when the golf courses and fishin' holes depopulate for the winter. Experience has shown me that the dog days of summer are the best time to find deals on the 'bay.Miller Bro`s wrote:I was wondering where you were, I had not seen you post in quite some time. Re: American Made Hunting & Fishing Fixed Blade Knives
M-B,
I've seen them by a variety of makers but I've never bought or bid on any of them. I've gotten to the point that I would just a soon hang on to the knife collecting $$ugar that I have set aside until something I really find striking and top shelf comes along. I can't afford the real high dollar stuff, but on the other hand I'd rather have ten $100-dollar knives as opposed to either a 100 ten-dollar ones or a thousand dollar one. The easiest way for me to accumulate the stuff is to buy some that resell well and then put the profits off that into the keepers and reinvest the initial capital into more stuff for resale. If I were to buy one of the panfish knives you mention, the one I'd go for is a bakelite handled Western States with the buffalo skull inlaid in the handle. They appear in the 1941 Western catalog and are shown on page 137 of Harvey Platts "The Knifemakers Who Went West' book. But, I'm probably prejudiced there, I'm getting more and more liking for Western States knives as time goes on.
Best, Eric

Re: American Made Hunting & Fishing Fixed Blade Knives
Eric,
You are going about collecting the right way.
The trouble with me is if I don`t have one I want one, then when I get it I lose interest and move on to something else Can you say A.D.D.?
I forgot about them Westerns, I don`t find many on this side of the country made by Western, but I can see why you like them.
I have been taking a liking to old Kinfolks knives lately.

Re: American Made Hunting & Fishing Fixed Blade Knives
I got a couple nice ones at the flea market a couple weeks ago.
The first is a Western L-39 with a Western Field tang stamp. Western made it for Montgomery Wards. The overall length is 9-1/4”, which is listed in Harvey Platts book for the L-39. I love the saber ground blade!
The sheath is stamped “Germany” so I think it is probably not the original.
This one is a Schrade Walden #147, called the Hunter’s Companion, but was called the Cougar in 1971. The pattern was made from 1961-1973.
It has some pitting on the blade, but it would make a great user knife.
