Made in Finland

Post by Ridgegrass »

Bought this in Annapolis yesterday. Pile side engraved "Made In Finland[iand some other writing (illegible) in the fuller. 8" overall with a nice old embossed sheath. Engraved brass mounts and a very hard, maybe bakelite yellow handle. I think it's maybe a souvenir but it's old and in very nice condition. Any info appreciated. J.O'.

Nice score!

I use the heck out of Moras on the farm, but I think it's time I bought a nice Puukko. I think I've finally decided on a Jarvenpaa Scout; but I'm trying to decide between the small ( my ideal size for a fixed blade with a 3.5" blade; but shown by them as having a pointed blade, but Jarvenpaa only makes it with a blunted tip) or the Medium (which is about $20 more expensive, but has a pointed blade, but is also slightly too big for my uses with a 4.5" blade). Good thing is I found a dealer/importer specializing in Puukkos in upstate NY, so I don't have to pay $30 in shipping costs.

It is an excellent old Horsehead Puukko. Not a tourist item. Many of the Finnish puukkos have "Made in Finland" on them. Why it is written in English even though these knives are being sold to locals is a mystery. The handle is "Galalite" a material made from casein, a protein found in milk.
Can you show a picture of the sheath ? Knife should be a snug fit in the sheath.

Very nice JO!! Many have brass mounts, yours in nickel looks very nice! A search of ebay "sold items" should provide you with a good current value. I found a smaller one at a flea 20 years ago for five bucks, gave it to a friend of Finnish descent but he sold it to a well known knife dealer for $25 who then sold it for more. These do have a collector following in this country.

Shoot fire, Ridgegrass! I'll double Floyds offer, just to help you get rid of that ol' thing quickly! ::stir::
It appears you got a good deal! ::tu::
I've got one with a blue handle and a leather scabbard that has been around the family a lot longer than I've been alive.

Sheath is not complete. Originally it had a leather belt loop and likely some metal attaching it to the part you have.

Thanks good. Cannot see it in picture so i thought it was missing as it often is on theses puukko sheaths.

Hello. I just registered here.
Nice old puukko. These are made even today in Kauhava, Finland. The village of Kauhava is famous for its knives. It dates back to a time (1790-1880) when there was no proper law enforcer in the area and the men who were called 'Häjyt' settled their disputes with knives.
