Sabre #644

Post by zed6309 »

I got this japanes Sabre 644 stockman recently, possibly at some point in its life it got trod on ? The top bolsters was a tad squashed and overlapping the liners a bit and the scale pin had come out so the scale had shrunk over the years,so I gently lifted the bolster and using my peening hammer I tapped them back, the pivot pins was showing through the bolsters so I filled and polished them, the shrunk scale I epoxed back down and glued the brass pin in the hole after cutting it down as wouldn't line back up with the hole due to shrunk scale,I cleaned the blades and sharpened them,I tried to keep the knifes age and character, hopefully it will last many more years ::tu::

Paul:

No 644 stamp on mine that I can see. Also, the shield on my knife says "Sabre". I can't tell if yours does. Maybe they're the same model from different years or something, but they appear to be very similar.

Agreed. This is my only Sabre, but it's a sturdy, well built knife. I have no idea of when it was made but they did a real good job. ::nod::

'Z', I have five. Two Sabre fruit knives made in Japan. A Sabre medium jack made in Japan. A Monarch medium jack made in Japan and a Sabre Monarch 205 medium jack made in the USA. All well made knives and I'm glad to have them.

These are the tang stamps on the Sabre Monarch 205, mark and pile sides.

Looks like the handle material is different on the 644s as well as the jigging. Mike's appears to be bone and Paul's is a manmade material. I've noticed a little more interest in Sabre knives recently. ::tu::

Paul I've got one or two tucked away somewhere that I've had since buying them new in the late 60s so I guess what you heard was correct.

I picked up this Sabre #644 at a gunshow over the weekend for a few bucks. Seems to be used very little. Into my stockman collection it goes.

Thanks guys. I don't think this one has ever been used. A guy at the gunshow had it in his $5 an item box. I usually dig thru a lot of those kind of boxes and find stuff like this. Got to be careful when doing that though, some people open the blades and put them back in the box. TERRORISTS!!

Yes, we have to vigilant here watching over our politicians that they do not force laws onto us like some other countries have. My great grand dad was a full blood Englishman, born in Hereford, Herefordshire in 1829, came to the US in 1856. The story is passed down in our family that the reason he moved to the US was the "British noble class and their damned horses and dogs running across my farm crops in pursuit of foxes". I am the 3rd generation of my family in the US descended from him.

I'm 60--when young you could go in many stores-grants-woolworths ect ..in 60s to mid 70s? big display of SABRE BRAND (japan) ALL KNIVES ON DISPLAY WERE 99 cents--that's why they fall apart-ONLY 99c...

ok I admit I was not fond of jap. sabres-because when 8 to 10 yrs., old I walked by the 99c displays with my nose in the air looking at the cheap knives with distain because I had a genuine IMPERIAL cub or boy scout knife with a phillips head screwdriver among other blades-it served me well for many years-and had to have cost 2 to 5 dollars...

I picked up these two Sabres at 2 of our local antique malls recently. The stockman looks like the other 644 I have, (which is pictured above in this thread), but this one does not have 644 on the tang stamp. Overall length is the same as is blade layout. Also the shields are the same, but this one has Sabre stamped on it. Notice the jigging has more of a criss-cross pattern to it also. If it flies like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it must be a Sabre 644. The second one is a Sabre 614 trapper. I don't know if I had ever seen one before. Both are now included into my Sabre pile.
