I've always wondered, what is the hook thingy found on many knives supposed to be for? I rarely use the one on my Fieldmaster, and had already had my Fieldmaster for three years before I even knew it had the hook. I've heard shopping bag carrier (why would I do that, wouldn't it damage the springs?) parcel hook, and even for loosening ski bindings. Personally, I've used it for threading twine a few times and that's it.

I find my Fieldmaster great for most jobs. Other than the blades, I'd say the scissors, saw, and Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, and especially now, the bottle opener are used the most since my grandparents bought some of the Mexican-produced 12 ounce glass-bottled Cokes that use the real sugar the other day and the lids don't screw off like on the US 8 ounce ones. Mine needs rehandling, as the handle scales are loose, and the front one had a large chunk break off.

Right now, a Fieldmaster is the knife I've got in my pocket. I've got a Cadet (great grandfather's) and Classic SD as well. I find the tiny ones not good for "big jobs" on the farm or camping like what I've used my Fieldmaster for. I'd like to purchase a few of the military-issue knives from around the world, a few other different non-military ones for some specific features (like the Equestrian for its hoof pick and the Handyman as it's essentially my Fieldmaster with a file and pliers) and the original made in the 1880s, but $1000 is well too much for my budget.

There's a web site called SAKWiki.com at -- http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Tool+List
Tells you just about anything you want to know about SAKs.

And this is what they have to say about The Hook

" In 1991 Victorinox started manufacturing the Multipurpose Hook. Since then they have added it to knife models with scissors. The Scissor and Hook share a common spring and are always paired together on 91mm knives. This is a good way to date some knives, as any scissor equipped models without the hook are from before 1991. The Hook is sometimes referred to as the Parcel Carrier, since this in one common use. You might have to be a little inventive to think of using this tool, but it can be a very effective tool. It is rated for use up to 200lbs.

Introduced around 1998, the newest addition to the Multipurpose Hook is an engraved Nail File surface on its back along its spine. See the photo for a comparison. This new addition though only appears on a few models such as the Compact.

Common Uses
• Carrier/Handle (Parcel, Shopping Bag, Bucket)
• Puller (Tarp, ))Tent-Peg((, Wire, Racked Computer, tin-opener)
• Rope/Lace tightener
• Nail File "

The "nail file" has me puzzled. :?

Edit: Something in my SAK folder I had forgotten I had. As always, left click twice to expand to full size.

I'm having a difficult time imagining the "hook" being used as a nail file.

Guess they meant anything by "multipurpose" hook!

I've decided I need the pliers and file of the Craftsman and Handyman, plus the chisel on the bottom set of small tools. Problem is, both knives are virtually the same, except the Handyman has the corkscrew (that also is used to carry the eyeglass screwdriver), and the Craftsman has the Phillips screwdriver (which is one tool I constantly use on my Fieldmaster) The screws on my eyeglass frames work out all the time, and with that need, I need the corkscrew to carry the eyeglass screwdriver, but since I don't drink (I'm three years too young, anyway!) wine, I don't need the corkscrew. Are there any non cork-pulling tasks that the corkscrew is well suited to that would outperform the fact that I constantly use the Phillips screwdriver?

How would I go about trying to get the current issue military Victorinox knives made only for various foreign (and US, as the Navy apparently uses them too) militaries?

I know the current Swiss and German Army standard issue knives are offered by Victorinox for the civilian market, and thus easily found, and used ex-military Victorinox knives that have been phased out are occasionally available on Ebay, but for the Dutch Army Knife (which is essentially a Dual Pro with fancier handles, much like those on the German Army 2008, but with a different crest) and the Malaysian Special Forces knives (both looking more civilian than the German and Polish knives), I cannot find them anywhere on the secondary market.

I DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THE NEW STYLE....
I WAS INTO THEM IN THE "ALOX" PHASE........ NEW ONES JUST DONT DO IT FOR ME ::undecided::

BUT ON "ALOX SOLDIERS"
they are all the same bro..... (my understanding is the new style are the EXACT SAME WAY)
only difference is a SCALE marking , that SAID COUNTRY chooses to have put on by the factory
-sometimes this is a letter or number engraved in the "initial engrave plate"..........but not always
again it is how that COUNTRY chooses to have victorinox do "THEIR RUN"
they are all special runs........ so LIMITED and not every run may be exact same

i could go on and on.... but it would be about ALOX SOLDIER..... ::nod::

ALOX - HARD TO FIND...... USUALLY START AROUND $500
AND ARE RARELY FUND IN US MARKET......EBAY IT "ALMOST" YER ONLY BET!
THEY ARE VERY VALUABLE,COLLECTIBLE , AND RARE!!!!!!!!!! DID I MENTION RARE!!!!??????

I WAS INTO THEM FOR 4 YEARS.........HEAVY!!
NEVER COULD AFFORD A SINGLE ONE THAT CAME UP FOR SALE..... AND I SPEND A CRAP TON ON KNIVES A YEAR ::mdm::

THERE ARE MANY MANY (I MEAN A LOT!!) FOREIGN COUNTRIES....SOME I NEVER EVEN HEARD OF (MAINLY AFRICA) THAT USED OR DID USE A VICTORINOX ALOX SOLDIER..... I MAY HAVE LISTED THEM HERE ON AAPK IN PAST??? DO A SEARCH MAYBE?????????

GOOD LUCK BRO!!!
THEY ARE FUN KNIVES TO COLLECT
I HAD TO STOP BUYING THE RED CELL UNITS...... AS THEY NEVER DID HOLD ANY RESALE VALUE IMPO, AND I TRIED TO BUY/SELL THEM FOR 1 FULL YEAR ::td::
ALOX..... NOW THEY BRING SOME BUCKS!!!! ::groove:: ::tu::

Speaking of Alox knives, this is the only one I have (or ever could afford!). This was purchased in the early '90s by my great-grandfather shortly before his death in '93. I used to carry it quite a bit when I was first into knives, as I preferred the sturdy Alox to Cellidor, but I decided to never carry it again, as it is a family heirloom. On eBay this knife tends to bring more than $100, just another reason to not carry it. I have a beat-up and practically worthless Colonial SAK-style knife with the same tools that I keep as a backup for my Victorinox Fieldmaster which is my usual everyday carry knife.

::tu:: l like my Deluxe Tinker, it has all the tools that I need with no tools that I don't need. I carry it when I drive bus on field trips, it really comes in handy for fixing sports equipment and any other small jobs that come along. ftd

I carried the black one for about 3 years every day...real handy and when you need a saw , it's great. The red 2 blade fits in the pocket nice. The purple one just lives in a tube , like the Mountain Climber lives in a box. ::shrug::
I think for the money they are like WD-40 ...doesn't cost a lot ,but they work when you need em.

I am posting to show my accumulation of SAK. I say "accumulation" because there is no focus on any particular model, or tools, etc., just about 120 different models/types of these iconic working knives.
I will do a second post to show some individual knives and ask a few questions.

Here is the Alox SAK i carry with me always. Slender yet strong with 3 blades: one to slice/cut. one to saw and one to poke with: = most bases covered with a light weight knife that you do not even notice in your pocket:

I cannot figure out how to place the correct text with it's picture so i will just do 1 knife per post & spread it out over a few daze.
