2 Blade Fishing Knife
2 Blade Fishing Knife
Looking for a knife that can be put in my tackle box and used (not a collector knife). The knife I'm interested looks similar to a Texas Toothpick with a second blade that acts as a scaler and hook remover.
I came across one in a group of knives that I bought but it was severely rusted (celluloid outgassing damage?). But I liked the design of the knife so I'm looking for a useable knife.
Lots of them on E-Bay but I thought I'd check with the folks here before buying there.
Thanks.
Jeff

PM me your mailing address and I'll send you one for a Christmas present. Just pay it forward. You can reimburse me for the postage if you like but not a big deal.

Bob - that is the Christmas spirit!
Jeff - I have several of the type knife you are talking about. There are a couple that I actually use. My favorite is the Case fishing knife. At about $50 new it is not cheap but not too expensive to use. I have had the one in the photo for a couple of years and I have scaled and headed fish dozens of times using that knife. I mostly fish salt water and after a hundred or so fishing trips it has not rusted much. The scaler works good on fish that do not have real tough scales.
The other knife in the photo is a Rough Rider, about $20. I like it too, though I have not used it as much. The scaler has a kind of aggressive edge and you can slice into a tender fish like a trout with that scaler. The RR is 5 inches closed and weighs twice as much as the 4.3 inch Case.
I keep wanting to try a GEC Farm and Field fishing knife, but I just cannot make myself spend $90 for a fishing knife. Not yet, anyway!

Re: 2 Blade Fishing Knife
Thanks for the info Mel.
I recently retired about a year ago so I got back into fishing. I make an effort to get out once a month. To me there's nothing more relaxing than a few hours spent casting lures (I even hook a fish from time to time). I was looking for a knife that I could throw in my tackle box. I like that the scaler has a small notch in it to help dislodge hooks that the fish occasionally inhale.
It was a pleasant surprise to have one offered to me for free!

Re: 2 Blade Fishing Knife
That's a decent knife there, Jeff. By the way, that little hole down there in the bottom bolster is a hook straightener.
Good one, Bob.
