The M1905 is the long blade (16") bayonet used on the M1 Garand and the M1903A rifles up through the first 2 years of WW2.

The M1 is the 9.6" bayonet for the M1 Garand rifle. It also fits on the M1903 and M1903A rifles. It was adopted as the standard bayonet in early 1943.

As soon as there were enough M1 bayonets fielded, the M1905s started getting chopped down to about 9.75". The cut-down M1905s have been called either M1905s or M1s, depending on who was speaking at the time. Their correct designation is M1905E1.

The M1917 bayonet is for use on the M1917 Enfield .303 rifles and the seven models of trench shotguns. The M1917 will not fit any of the M1, M1903 or M1903A rifles as well as they will fit the weapons they were designd for.

The muzzle ring ID for the M1/M1905 is 0.62". They will NOT fit at all on the Enfield or the shotguns.
The muzzle ring ID for the P1913/M1917 is 0.655" to 0.660". They will fit the M1/M1903/M1903A but more loosely than the M1/M1905 bayonets will.

The P1913 is the British designation for the same Enfield rifle. The M1917 is simply a copy of the P1913.

Let us not forget the later and shorter still M5 / M5A1 variants---if your Garand is of Korean Conflict vintage this would be appropriate to be period correct...or if you don't want to have a calvary sabre hanging off the end of an already heavy rifle...

There is also the M4, which replaced the M1 late in WW2.

The M5 was the M4 blade with different mounting system that was easier to manipulate while wearing the very bulky gloves needed during the brutal Korean winters.

I believe that you are correct about them sharing blade dimensions, however the M4 was designed to fit the M1 Carbine and is not interchangeable with the Garand.

The M4 bayonet was the late WW-II evolution of the M3 Trench knife. The M4 bayonet was made to fit the late WW-II bayonet lug on the M-1 Carbine, it was not made for the M-1 Garand. The M-1 Garand can use the M1905 (WW-I or WW-II variations), the M-1, the M1905E1 (cut down - two variations in the point), or the Korean era M5 & M5A1 bayonets (the difference between these two being spring tension). I do not have it in front of me right now but I think there is another version that did not have a bbl ring. It only had a half moon that rested under the bbl with the lug holding everything together. As things go with age I cannot remember if this version was for the Garand or the 30 carbine. I am reasonably sure it was the Garand, sorry cant remember the number. I think it was late Korea maybe 54. I will find it tomorrow.
