Is case stag getting hard to find again?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Is case stag getting hard to find again?

Post by sedona »

A man that I buy most of my knives from told me 2 weeks ago that he wouldn't be able to get any more case stag mini copperlocks in the near future. He said that he could still get some of the smaller knives though.I asked him if there is or was going to be another embargo on sambar stag like 10 or 15 years ago and he really didn't know.Has anyone else heard of this?Thank you

I don't think there has been any stag imported for several years.

I guess it depends on what "era" Case Stag you're referring to. Modern Case Stag might be harder to find though I have not heard anything about it. If you're referring to older Case Stag knives, they're everywhere. I don't have any trouble finding those for sale. You just have to know where to look.

A lot of the knife making supply sites have no stock listed under sambar stag.

I was referring to buying new stag knives. I got a hold of a man that makes custom knives and he told me in 1997 there was a brief time that he could get stag but since then there has been an embargo. The man I buy my case stag knives from told me last month that he only had a few larger stag knives like the mini copperlock and when they were gone he would only be able to get smaller stag knives.

I've always been curious ... Sambar stag is imported from asia ... with all the white-tail and mule deer we have here in the USA, is there a technical reason domestic deer stag horn can't be used for knife making ? Is it softer or not as colorful or "gnarly" as sambar ? It just seems we have a practically unlimited resource that isn't used ... ::shrug::
pffffft that's not a knife ......... now THAT'S a knife !! Crocodile Dundee

John, American Elk was used on the 2012 annual knife and White Tail Deer was used on the 2011 annual knife so they can, have been and still are used as handles. Some folks don't think the Elk, White Tail and European Red Deer antlers have as much character as the Asian Sambar Stag.
