Help with Handle Material

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Help with Handle Material

Post by hans »

Hello,

I am in the process of selling off my father in laws collection of knives. Pictured here is one of the knives in his collection. I am not sure what type of material is used for the handle. The box has Elk Horn but I am not 100 percent convinced that it is.

I don't think elk horn was ever offered on the classics. If I had to take a stab at it from the photo,..I'd say rams horn.

Can you do us a favor and show multiple views of the knife, shield and pile side, tangs & blade markings along with the box ?

By viewing all of these things we might be able to help you determine a lot of info on your knife.

Thanks for the response so far. Here are a few more pictures of the knife. The label that said elk horn was a label someone added after it was purchased.

Chris,

I believe you are 100 % correct ..... looks like Ram's Horn to me too.

Never seen any elk that looked like that.

I'm pretty positive it's rams horn.
The inner part with the outside bark of the horn removed.

This is a knife I made many years ago, actually the only knife I made.
The only procedure I didn't do was the heat treating.
Don't have the equipment so I had it done at a shop.
Like repairing and restoring better.

The knife is what I call a lock back Barlow with a drop point blade.
Made of 440 stainless all the way around.
Lined the middle pivot pin with a brass liner for a precision action.
The handles are made of rams horn that I ground the outer bark off of.
Although I coated the handles with a polymer coating they look the same as the knife in question.
