How The Monthly AAPK Knife Giveaway's Work

Post by bestgear »

I've gotten a number of inquiries about how the monthly AAPK knife giveaway's actually work. Here's a step-by-step explanation:

1. I maintain the list of the forum members that have stepped forward and said they'd like to be a donor for a particular month and year. Right now we have donors scheduled about 18 months.

2. About 60-days before the monthly giveaway starts, I contact the scheduled donor for the month they volunteered for and ensure that they're still willing to be a donor. If they are, I ask for pictures and a description of the donated knife to be sent to me. If I can't make contact or they are no longer willing to be a donor, then I line-up an alternate for that month.

3. On the 1st of each month, I post a new topic for that month's knife giveaway with the pictures and description provided by the knife donor and forum members choose a number (0-999) for that month's giveaway anytime during the month.

4. On the last day of the month at 6pm Eastern time, the list of participants is closed and an official "Final List" of the entrants is posted in the monthly knife giveaway thread.

5. The winner is determined by the Illinois State Lottery evening pick three drawing on the last day of the month.

6. The individual closest to the selected number without going over wins the monthly knife giveaway.

7. The next day, I send the winner a PM and they have 10 days to respond with their name and shipping address. If they don't respond within the allotted time, then the knife is given away to the next closest winner on the list without going over.

8. I then contact the knife donor with the winners name and shipping address and the knife donor pays for and ships them the donated knife using the carrier and service of their choosing.

There is no financial support to AAPK associated with the knife giveaway, it's simply a fun game of chance that contributes to the community as a whole. I hope that answers many of your questions and I hope many of you that haven't already donated a knife will consider doing so in 2020!

Tom that is an excellent chronology of the monthly giveaway and I for one would like to thank all who participate in making this happen each and every month. It is I believe one of the things tha separates this site from all the others. People unselfishly giving their time and their knives just for the love of AAPK. ::clapping:: ::clapping:: ::clapping::

Why the Illinois State Lottery?
Shouldn't it be the state that the person who donates the knife comes from?
And if the donor is from another country they should be able to pick the state lottery the winning numbers should be picked from .

Because the give-away was started by Bryan (owner of AAPK, chief cook and bottle washer and all around nice guy). Bryan is from Illinois so using the KISS principle, he chose the Illinois State Lottery to provide the winning number. After all, what possible difference does it make if the Illinois State Lottery is used vs any one of the many other state lotteries. Why complicate things.

And we have that twice a day in the Illinois State Lottery Pick 3 game. It doesn't function in the same manner as the Random Generator you're talking about but the end result is the same and it's guaranteed to be tamper proof.

Sorry for the suggestion.
Just trying to suggest a little variety .
It gets a little boring with the same old give away.
I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks...….

Ps> I would think every member owns a little bit of this website from what everyone's contributed monetarily and with our priceless experience.
The site wouldn't exist without it's members no matter who owns it.

Why change something that's been working fine for a long time. Makes no sense.
If you want "a little variety", have a giveaway.

Ps. Your mistaken. Bryan owns AAPK.

As someone who just contributed a knife to the July 2019 giveaway, my experience with the existing process was fantastic. All I had to do was select a knife, take some pictures, put the knife in a box, and drop it off at the post office. Thanks to Tom for the work he puts in to coordinate the donor schedule. Also thanks to Jerryd for monitoring and posting the winning number. I believe folks would be much less willing to participate as donors if the onus for administering the entire process fell to the knife donor.

I'm in no way trying to put this give away down.
I've been trying to win a knife since 2011.
I guess if I ever do win one I'd play it back and donate one of mine.
Every untouched old new stock knife I own are mighty expensive though.
I might just have to buy a knife to donate.

Well, based on your last paragraph, looks like David's assessment of you was correct. Political musings aside, are you serious about being put in the ground with your pile of collectible knives ? Just so I understand your thinking ... you'd rather be buried with your stash of collectible vintage knives rather than donate just one example for someone else to enjoy ? I hope you're kidding (tough to tell on these internet forums)
pffffft that's not a knife ......... now THAT'S a knife !! Crocodile Dundee
