Birds - personal observations
Re: Birds - personal observations
Had 1st Red Breasted Nuthatch of the season today. Note not only the reddish breast, but also the eye stripe as compared to the White Breasted in the 2nd pic.

Had a visit from a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker this morning, the brownish tinge and near total lack of red, indicates that it is a juvenile. Note how the color and feather pattern helps him ( only males have red throats) blend into the bark of the tree.

Re: Birds - personal observations
Nice posts, Ike. I especially like the Sapsucker. I have one hanging around in my garden. I was trying to get some photos of it a couple of days ago, but it was an expert at moving just out of sight or flying to another branch when I got the camera focused!

Nice pics and information Ike.
Re: Birds - personal observations
My backyard has been fairly active over the past few days. Not a lot of new birds, though I did see the first Cedar Waxwings of the year in a Popcorn tree. I took these photos this afternoon while enjoying the very pleasant weather from my back porch.
Lots of Chickadees and Titmice at the feeder.
The Downey Woodpeckers also like the Popcorn Trees.
And the Yellow-rumped Warblers remain the most numerous birds in my garden.
Oh yes, I almost forgot these visitors to my feeder!

Re: Birds - personal observations
Nice assortment, Mel. I havent seen any Waxwings since early last summer, and have not yet had any YR Warblers.
The masked "night birds" havent been around either.

Wonderful photos Mel, as always.
Re: Birds - personal observations
House Finches are near constant visitors at my feeders, and everyone is probably tired of seeing them. I wasn't going to post anymore, but as I was watching birds come and go at the feeder, this particular one caught my eye. I don't recall ever seeing one this vivid, it is nearly "Cardinal bright", this pic has not been enhanced in any way.

Holy Cow, MadeinUSA, what amazing pics and variety. I am just slightly South of the Common Redpoll Winter range, really enjoy seeing that one. Please drop in again and show more.
What is lurking in the background in that pic of Catbirds?

Thanks for pics! That Cardinal is bizarre looking.
I asked about that pic because the brownish rock has what looks like (to me) a pair of eyes and a nose. I was imagining it to be something other than what it is.

Wow... I just looked closely and see what you are talking about... Looks like an animal face of some sort

If it is a male house finch it is the brightest one I've ever seen.Waukonda wrote: ↑Sat Dec 10, 2022 5:07 pm House Finches are near constant visitors at my feeders, and everyone is probably tired of seeing them. Very nice bird Ike. House Finches are normally very common in my backyard, but right now they are missing. Probably because I took my feeder down over the summer.Waukonda wrote: ↑Sat Dec 10, 2022 5:07 pm House Finches are near constant visitors at my feeders, and everyone is probably tired of seeing them. That is a great assemblage of birds, Jim. Very nice photography! My favorite is the Coopers Hawk, but I just like raptors.
