The older I get - Alan Jackson

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

The older I get - Alan Jackson

Post by jerryd6818 »

Got this this morning from an old Marine Corps buddy of mine. It just resonated with me. Hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as I do.

There is a lot of truth to that post. Only us older folks really appreciate
what was said.

Thank you, Jerry, for sharing this for us older fellers to chew on! ::handshake::
Best I could tell it would be about the 2nd verse of this song that said, "the older I get the fewer friends I have", really hit me as we just buried another one of my friends yesterday.

You took the words right outta my mouth. Alan Jackson is the perfect vocalist for that song, too.

Great song - you’re right that you have to be old to truly understand it.

Reminds me of when the Seniors Sunday School class taught a lesson to the rest of us. I was about 30 years old at the time. At the start of the class each of us were given a paper and pencil and told to write down, if we could be any age what would it be? So we all wrote down an age. The teens all wanted to be over 21. The 30-40 year olds wanted to be 25 to 30.

Then each of the seniors took turns telling of their favorite memories in their lives. Of children graduating high school or college, getting married, watching grandchildren grow up, of travel adventures, of 50 year friendships and 50th wedding anniversaries, etc. All things none of the younger folks had experienced.

Then they asked everyone to write down again what age they would like to be. IIRC the average the second time came out to be over 70.

Thanks for posting it Jerry, good song and well sung by one of my favorite singers.
Then line about having fewer friends is sure hitting me hard, seems I'm losing them at a rate much faster than I like

At 41 I still don’t have any grey hair, but that song still hits me where I live. Growing up in the steam engine business, most the guys who befriended me when I was a teenage kid were older than me by decades. Now I’m loosing them at the rate of about three a year. ::teary_eyes:: I look at old photos and choke on the thought of never hearing their voices again.
