Cars, trucks, rat rods and hot rods

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

Great stuff! Love the Winton and the Maxwell! What year is the Hupp? I did a 1911 Runabout some years ago for a friend of mine who collects vintage race cars.
EDIT: Meant to ask what the two-tone green phaeton in the last pic is.

Man those are some gorgeous vehicles !
I love most any old or classic car, but pre-WW2 and Brass Era really get my heart going.
They are not usually well represented at any show I've been able to attend.
My bucket list includes the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, but it'll probably never happen .. .. ..

I know for a fact that without a lottery win (and it's tough to win if you don't play) I will never make a Concours d'Elegance.

Nice. Your kids have good taste!

The bright yellow car in your first post is a 1980 Oldsmobile Rallye 350. It's a one year only model that was made in small numbers. Very cool!

Thanks Dan.. The Pontiac was purchased new in 1970 by my dad.. Was the first new car he ever bought.. Never driven in snow etc and has 95 plus thousand miles.. It is all original (except wheels/tires) .. Used it in my first prom and also in my wedding in 1980.. Lots of family memories..

This is the oldest automobile I’ve ever seen in person. 1886 Benz. Lives at the Owls Head Transportation Museum in Owls Head, Maine. The day we were there they took it from its place on display to the shop, started it up and gave a few folks a ride in it! It has a horizontal fly wheel behind the seat which is manually spun to start it. IIRC they said only twelve were ever made, and four are known to exist today. The guy pictured in the plaid shirt is a volunteer docent at the museum. I have a video of him starting it and talking about it while it was running, but don’t know how to post it here. ::shrug::

My Dad used to have a 1966 F-100; his had the 352, if memory serves me correctly. I used to have a 1991 F-150 with the 300 inline six. That thing had an ample supply of torque!

Good question. Here’s another picture in which the brake is more easily seen. If you were seated in the vehicle the brake is the straight metal rod on the left, just outside the left arm rest and beyond the wrist of the guy in the picture. You simply pull back on it which applies friction. Much like the brake on a horse drawn buggy of the day. The driver sat to the left in the seat, which allowed it to be steered using the right hand via the “tiller” mechanism which turns the front wheel. BTW the shiny copper canister behind the seat is the fuel tank, holds a gallon.

Have never been to the Owl's Head Museum but I did stripe a vehicle that was donated to it many years ago.
The car is a 1913 Rolls-Royce touring car that was originally purchased as a closed car by one Alice Longfellow who was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's daughter. Sometime in the 1920's it was sent to the factory in Springfield Massachusetts(yes they did build Rolls Royce cars there)to be re-bodied as a phaeton.
In the early 1930's it was purchased by Roger Bemis who regularly drove the car until it was caught in the flood of 1938 on Cape Cod Massachusetts. Roger then set about to completely overhaul the car. It was finished sometime in the 1980's and he thought he would like to have the body pinstriped. A mutual friend by the name of Malcolm Lee;a person I had striped several cars for contacted me about doing the job.
It was completed about 6 months before Mr. Bemis passed away from the complications of Parkinson's disease and his will stipulated that the car be donated to the museum.
The picture of the car is from a magazine article and the two lower pictures are of me striping the hood and Mr. Bemis and Malcolm looking on.
