How bout this? If you had to describe yourself with some kind of knife or cutlery word or words, term or terms, patterns, parts, features whatever, even words used to describe a knife are ok, as long as it is knife related, what comes to mind?

I'll start.:

TPK = Sandy Joints, & Swell Center.

I came up with a few more but I don't want to use up all the good descriptive words in one post.

Who's next? ::super_happy::

"SUNSHINE"

The sky today,
Is grey in grey,
Then several clouds,
Just drift away,

A beam of light,
Comes breaking through,
The sun is shining,
Just for you.

This poem is not about knives, but a bit more somber. I recently lost a very close friend of 22 years due to Alzheimer's / Dementia. She was the inspiration for this poem, for whenever I would go and visit her at the Assisted Living Facility, she would look me in the eyes and say; "Just Hold Me". I lost my Dear Friend in early September 2019, after witnessing for three years the toll Alzheimer's took on her life.

Anyway...if anyone has a loved one, or knows of someone with this debilitating disease, possibly the words I've penned will be of some comfort. It's because of my relationship, involvement and caring for my friend that I was able to recognize so many of the emotions and experiences to write this. This is about her, and all those who suffer from this disease. May God Bless each and every one of them.

*JUST HOLD ME*
( A Poem About Those With Alzheimer’s )

I’m not an expensive item
Sitting upon a shelf
I am cracked and broken
Deep within myself

I no longer have the luster
My body tired and worn
It’s happened over many years
Since the day that I was born
Just hold me…

My thoughts are rather scattered
With words tossed to and fro
What I say makes total sense
Why do they not know?

People talk about me
And they think I cannot hear
But I catch every word they say
When they stand so close and near
Just hold me…

I’m not as strong as they would think
My body is weak and sore
My balance is just a little off
My legs don’t work no more

My mind is not the same today
When younger I used to be
I get confused and lack the words
When you try to talk to me
Just hold me…

I remember things so long past
But not five minutes ago
I see frustration in your eyes
Of things you do not know

I get so flustered with my thoughts
Trapped in this withering shell
No one sees or understands
This life I know so well
Just hold me…

I can’t just tell you what it’s like
You would never understand
But it’s not your fault, don’t feel bad
That I’ve been dealt this hand

Just talk to me like anyone
I may not speak, but hear
The memories you share with me
Are the ones I too hold dear
Just hold me…

I may not be here come next day
So enjoy our moments shared
Thank you for the precious time
You’ve shown how much you cared

So every time you’re close nearby
And you see my pleasant smile
Come closer still and reach for me
And,
Just hold me, for awhile…

Wow Ken, that's a very touching piece of literature. ::tu:: ::tu:: ::tu:: Thanks for sharing that with us. ::handshake:: It's awesome! ::tu::

I took a MOOC (Massive open online course) about Dementia last year over the University of Tasmania. They offer 2 free courses on this subject. They are free & you become a certificate of completion when you finish in case anyone is interested. It's not that hard to complete if you are interested in the topic. I think the one I took was called "Preventing Dementia". You can't really prevent it but the best way to avoid these types of illnesses is to stay socially active and by learning, especially, new languages. ::tu::

Thank You, QuickSteel, Doglegg & TPK (Tom), I appreciate the thoughts. ::handshake::

Tom, Thank you for the insight on the courses. I've made note of them and will consider these. I too am a firm believer in keeping ones mind (brain) active with various mental exercises such as playing strategic games, reading and socializing. My friend, Jerry (short for Geraldine) taught me so much about the do's and don'ts of being on the 'other side' of this disease. I made some mistakes, got frustrated and upset with her several times, until I realized...she's no longer living in "my" world, but in her own private world. It was a learning curve for me, and I strongly believe that sometimes, it's harder on those who are watching and witnessing the deterioration of the mind, imho.

Thanks again for all your kind thoughts.

Here's something I wrote - 12/12/99

Bisley

Don't send me no Christmas card
With peace and joy and all,
I recon I got the peace I need
And joy has made it's call.
I don't discount these things in life,
I'm willing to aspire,
But sometimes I like worldly things
And this is my desire.
Jist send me one ol' Bisley piece,
I promise it wont rust.
I'll keep it in fine shootin' shape
till I turn to dust.
I don't want no frilly thing
With gold or curley que.
I'll take a plain ol' case hard frame
And lots of shiny blue.
If yer thinkin' of some ferrin make
Or one from Hartford town
I'd like to place a leetle bug
About one I'd like to own.
I like six beans in the wheel,
One I can aim jist right.
I won't take less than a "Fourty Five"
And a grip that's mighty tight.
All them imports ain't fer me,
They're guess work that's fer sure.
But Rugers guns is jist the thing,
They're sure to be the cure.
Fer when yer challenged to a shootin' match
And you take them on in spite,
You know you have a likely chance;
At least your gun has sights.
So shoot them guns and make some noise
And roll them bean cans 'round,
Fer Ruger Bisleys, with them sights
Is the best that can be found.

There is some GREAT artistic work of the pen being displayed in this forum. Very nice indeed. I enjoy reading the thoughts of others, for it provides a look into one's soul and the heart of their desire.

Everyone keep up the good work and continue to share. ::tu:: I've got a few more I'll share, that I've penned over the years during events which inspired me.

This is a poem I penned back in 2006 about the Patriot Guard Riders. For those who are not familiar with this motorcycle group, it was started back in 2003, if I recall correctly, and was formed as a deterrent against vile protesters at the funerals of our military personnel who died in action. The main protesting group was the Westboro Baptist Church people who were very caustic and hateful toward our fallen military members and their families, especially at the funerals. Hence, the PGR would go to the funerals, when requested, and form lines and wave Old Glory and become a protective barrier between the families and venues against the WBC. I used to ride, but had to give it up due to physical restrictions. Nevertheless, I give GREAT honor to the PGR and to all those who give their time, emotions and soul to this very viable endeavor. If one is interested in more information about the PGR, a simple web search will bring them up.

Patriot Guard Riders

In the distance before you see them arrive
The thunder of iron horses begin to draw neigh
Bedecked in leather and glowing with pride
A sea of Old Glory attached to each ride

The slow moving caravan of riders on two
Move toward their purpose as they come into view
A mission of honor with red, white and blue
To uphold our freedom, fought for me and for you

Invited as strangers, yet treated like friends
To shield a fallen one as the ceremony begins
Not looking for honor, respect or fame
Just volunteering for duty in a fallen one’s name

So many of us come from miles away
Every mission becomes a soul searching day
Driven by humbleness and a caring heart
Our purpose for one that sets us apart

Some places have crowds that haggle with jeers
Some places are quiet with soft shed tears
All places are solemn with sadness of heart
As we stand at attention and do our part

Protesters are angry at what we proclaim
And try to disrupt and tarnish a name
The air is filled with accusing and hate
As we stand in honor of this given date

We have no problem with them being loud
As the signal is given to drown out this crowd
With ignitions afire, and throttles revved high
No other words heard as they silence their cry

We hold our flags high in the formation line
Providing salutes for the very last time
The sound of taps playing, our eyes will leak
Feeling no shame as tears roll down our cheek

A contentment of pride flows within one’s soul
As each individual accomplishes their goal
But even one person does not get this done
It’s accomplished by many who all become one

This band of riders, many thousands strong
Band together to right a wrong
Riding against those who would blemish a name
Covering the innocent, those without blame

So steadfast we remain for the purpose at hand
For the fallen and family, proudly we stand
No other purpose but to protect and shield
In honor of those who died in the field

As we continue to be the invited guests
We eagerly look forward to all the requests
Honoring the fallen, we’re shielding providers
To family and loved ones, we’re the Patriot Guard Riders
