The "EDC Phenomenon".

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

The "EDC Phenomenon".

Post by cody6268 »

I'm I the only one who kinda doesn't get the whole EDC phenomenon? I do call what I have on me an "EDC". Like, my watch, wallet, pen, cellphone, as well as my tools; usually a knife, Swiss Army Knife, and/or multitool; and also other equipment such as a flashlight and assorted other things (I usually carry a pair of 125mm Knipex Cobra pliers; as well as a Pocketwrench II, which is a small tool that combines a pry bar and an "alligator' type wrench). Yet some stuff, kinda has me scratching my head. It just adds weight and bulk to what you're carrying, and rarely actually becoming useful.

For example, you'll often see pocket grappling hooks, and a lot of lock pick sets being pushed for EDC use. My view, is if the lock screws up or you forget your keys; that's one thing. If you lock your keys in the car, call AAA. That's why my folks got me a AAA membership when I got my license. Carrying a lock pick set can be viewed as suspicious. Grappling hooks are kinda silly. I only had use for them when I was into model aircraft a lot--kept crashing the things into the roof. And I was typically able to rig something that worked to get the plane off the roof.

All you need as a EDC is already part of you.
It's in your head.
It's called a brain....

I ask a neighbor kid the other day what 6 X 5= …
They went for their smartphone...
Why am I paying all this school tax for?
Just buy the kid a phone.
What a waste of tax money.
I could have used it for the new roof I need. Instead I'll have to patch it and hope it makes it through another winter.
I remember trying to bring a calculator to school which was quickly confiscated and returned at the end of the year.

I don't even own a cell phone.

I think it depends a lot on how you expect the day to play out. If you think you’re only going to the office and straight home, then you have a very small edc. If, like me, you live in an unstable area, you may carry a bit more. For me, it earthquakes. I like to have items on me that will allow me to get under cover (foil blanket) and build a fire. I also can boil water. It just seem like a responsible thing to do. I’m one less panicking fool for the Red Cross to deal with!

I've always had an illogical fascination with pocket knives (and all things mechanical), and have finally given up on worrying about it. I have a whole slew of EDC's that I rotate. It just makes me happier having one in my pocket and I even have fun figuring out which one is going to accompany me on a given day. And when I need to use one, that's even more fun. My entire family knows that I always have one on me, and when I hear "dad, can I borrow your pocket knife for a second?" that makes me even happier. I could go on and on..... OK????

Sometimes I wish I could go back to the old days when I only owned one pocket knife at a time. I'd carry it for years until I lost it or broke it and then I'd get a new one.

I thoroughly enjoy being a knife collector and having all these knives to choose from. Wouldn't trade it for anything but I'd be lying if I said I don't miss the bond that I used to have with a constant companion.

I say this as I await a reply from a knife dealer on an offer I made him this morning.

Same with me more or less. In the period before 4-5 years ago when I discovered eBay, I only had a handful of "good" knives. Now, I've probably got a good dozen that I rotate in between, and that's not counting Swiss Army Knives or multitools.

I have to say based on experience with my grandchildren and also Cub Scouts I work with, most kids nowadays can do math without calculators or other tools. I'm sure there are kids that can't but they're not the majority from what I see.

My middle grandson will be a sixth grader this coming school year, in a small town in west Texas. He solves complex math problems (add/subtract and multiplication/division - nothing like calculus - yet) in his head, without pencil and paper. Gets him in trouble at school sometimes because his teachers want him to "show your work" on his papers. Not really though - his math teacher laughs about it because she knows he can do it in his head. All you have to do is ask him the problem, and he will give you the correct answer in a matter of seconds. ::shrug:: (he didn't inherit that from me! )

I was talking about the average kid.
There are always exceptions to the rule.
Take away the phones and see what happens.

I can do math on paper .
Not too good in my head.
I could use a stick & the ground to use as paper.
I don't need technology to figure something out is what I meant.
When I was their age all I had in my pocket was my knife.
My parents didn't see me from when I woke up till supper time.
I was on my own with no way to contact anyone.
I think this made me grow up a little faster than kids these days.

I'm not putting down technology and computers.
They are a powerful tool but can also be a weapon in the hands of the wrong kind of people.
Children are more vulnerable to attack "today" by these powerful tools .

Even at eight years old I could have answered that question - 6 X 5 is a trophy elk!

::hmm:: Yes they are really good hitters, but Lorenzen has been shakey his last 2 outings, usually he's really good in relief.
